The edge has the torsion bar front suspension like a 4x4 to give it that high stance in the 2-wheel drive version. A regular ranger 2-wheel drive has coil springs in the front, all 4x4's have the t-bars.
I thought Edge was the mid-level model, between the stripper XL and the "luxury(-ish)" XLT. Rubber floor, crank windows, etc.
I know a couple years ago, my grandfather bought a Ranger, basically told the salesman he wanted the cheapest one he could get with an automatic, A/C, and in "whatever color Mother wants." (Red) He ended up with an Edge...
Its a little confusing, because when they introduced EDGE, it was a lower trim level than XLT, but when they discovered people liked the higher stance, body colored fender flares, etc. the marketing guys loaded it up. By 03, most people considered EDGE to be 'higher' than XLT, although not as high as the FX4.
The two main differences are the torsion bar front suspension / higher stance like 4wd, and the body colored fender flares and bumpers.
Ok, so what makes a XLT a FX4...? And how do you know if you have a FX4, does it have it listed some where...? I don't know a whole lot about Ford's, this is my first Ford truck, but I'm lovin' it.....!
Aside from the FX4 decal on the rear quarter, it comes with upgraded (rancho) shocks and skid plates on the tranny and gas tank. The FX4 shares a lot with the XLT, but goes on to include things like the locking differential as standard equipment.
The FX4 level II has further off-roading enhancements; Bilstein shocks and a front skid plate to protect the oil pan, as well as a torsen brand limited slip diff. That model also includes fancy bucket seats and 15" forged aluminum wheels and 31 x 10.50 tires.
Both are excellent option packages in addition to a solid truck. Hope this helps and happy shopping!
PS: FX4 is just a fancy way of saying HEY! this truck is a 4x4, and the decals do a pretty good job of proclaiming that to the world.
I think when mine was stock, it was the model most similar to thr fx4, because, it had a high stance, the 4.10's w/ limited slip, a front skid plate, and some other stuff that made it different looking than most the other similar trucks of the era.

In addition to the above, the FX4 has been the only way to get a leather steering wheel. The FX4 package is pretty well loaded up, as tilt / cruise / power windows / power locks / remote keyless / fog lamps / aluminum wheels / rear slider are all standard on my 03.

Same here, as well as buckets, cup-holders out the yingyang, and 6 CD in-dash. All-in-all a darn fine truck. I look at it as an Exploder without a way to have to haul too many extra idiots.
