In addition to the above, the FX4 has been the only way to get a leather steering wheel. The FX4 package is pretty well loaded up, as tilt / cruise / power windows / power locks / remote keyless / fog lamps / aluminum wheels / rear slider are all standard on my 03.
My '99 is a XLT Supercab, but it's also got a "Sport" sticker on the rear fender flares... It also has leather steering wheel / power windows / fog lamps / aluminum wheels / rear sliding window / tilt wheel / cruise.... I guess it kind of a cross between the two of them......
i have a 98 xlt, and ive got the front torsion bars, and its only a 2wd also
I believe you're 100% correct........Front suspensions were all Twin-I-Beam up to around '96(?) then a couple years of SLA/coils/shock and then Torsion bars.
However, the Edge does seem to have some beefier parts. The spindles are Edge specific. (learned that when we ordered the Fab-Tech replacements)
The Edge up to '03 (maybe '04) had the real cool cowl hood. The front grill/lower bumper was also unique (and a much tougher looking truck IMO)
And don't forget the factory fender flares.
The last few years of "Edge" seem to be the same cosmetically as all other Rangers......especially that dumb wannabe Super Duty 3 section grill.
Spindles, home made shock hoops, Fox shocks.
Oooops!!!

I also believe, that to get a regular cab 4X4 you have to go with the Edge. I love my FX4, but I still wish I got the FX4 Level II because I wanted the tires.

Aprox 50 MPH sweeper when the R front tire blew or was cut....barrel roll time.
Rolled truck over, pulled the plugs and cranked to get the oil out, went to Discount Tie to get new Mud Terrain (for free!!!), drove it like shown untill installing new cab.
This truck has been jumped, raced, rolled....last week pulled out a stuck full size Ram....and taken nearly 5 years of abuse from a 15 1/2 year old first time driver.

EDGE was introduced in 01, FX4 was introduced in 02. Until 02, you could order leather steering wheel as a stand-alone option on the XLTs, but after the FX4 came on the scene, the only way to get it was part of the FX4 package. Go figure...
FX4 off road came standard with the bench, buckets were optional. FX4 level II came standard with the upgraded buckets.
In non-FX4 XLT and EDGE, the power equipment group is an option for power windows/locks/mirrors/keyless, etc., while the FX4 came standard with all that stuff.
For the '06, the "Edge" package turned into the "Sport" package. My 06 ext cab sport 4x4 came with 16" wheels, 4.0, LS, 6 disc in dash, and power everything....just no carpet.
