whats everbodys opinion on shift kits i take my truck to dealer ship on friday for trans work and when i get it back i want to do somethings to help it live longer, i know im going to get a deep pan, and i already have trans temp gauge installed, just wondering about a shift kit, i had one in a 95 F150 and that truck still has original trans in it with i think about 175,000 on it but i like to hear all opinions on it
I think the best way to make your tranny last longer is to install an aftermarket cooler. Otherwise, leave it alone. The original automatic transmission in my '92 F-150 lasted 230,000 miles with only fluid changes. I put the Sonax valve and Tricumulator spring kit in my '00 F-250. Shifted harsh and the OD light started blinking after 1000 miles. Had to have the valve body rebuilt. I think the valve and springs are still on my workbench if you want them....
I put the Sonax valve and tricumulator springs in my 00 F250 4R100 tranny at around 24k miles. Went from a slush bucket to a nicely firm shifting tranny. It was still purring along at 62k when I traded the truck for the one I have now. I wish my new truck shifted like my 00 did.
i have a trany temp gauge and with my stock cooler i never have seen over 180 even in the summer, but the problem is that the dealership rebuilt it at 29,000 and here i am again at 64,000 with more troubles, i rarely tow anything maybe a car sometimes for myself or a buddy, but this is rare and only for a few miles, i know the chip and big tires don't help but the truck is not abused and does no towing i think they should hold up better, oh and were would be a good place to buy the deep trans pan, and the sonnax valve, tricumalater springs.
the shift kit is a good idea for better shift response but depending on how the vehical is used the type of shift kit used it is only as good as the weakest link in the the trans. So I went a little further with my e4od in my 94 f250 with a 460 and made it bullet proof for towing . I put in a tugger shift kit, heavy duty torque converter changed the 4 gear planetary gear set to a 6 gear set, heavy duty boost valve and solinoid kit, heavy duty friction kit, heavy duty center shaft and bearings with hd band apply piston/mlps switch and forward ringgear and bearing along with a 15000lbs external cooler with a trans. temp. gauge. Got 10,000 miles on it now and it runs at 150 degrees m/t and just over 180 towing.
still waiting to install my TransGo in my 4R100, but the difference between my stock Z71 trans (700R4), then to a B&M(whitch was a great improvement), and then to a TransGo(which was awsome)! TransGo has my top rating so far.
heard & read good things about the FTVB. don't know if i like the price compared to the TransGo "tugger" kit(mine was $70). yea there's more involved with the trans go, but there are more options too. my TransGo kits comes with everything that FTVB offers and a few more springs & plungers (2 to be exact)! now i just have to get a chance to install it!
ok thanks for all the info but now i guess my question is do i go with the full on shift kit wich would be a transgo since that is what i put in the last truck i owned and it worked ok or do i just get the sonnax valve/tricumulatorsprings
go for the WHOLE KIT! better to get it all in there the first time! i tried the B&M whitch was a complete kit, and then went to a TransGo and that actually included a couple more parts, and an added drill bit for a seperate section of the valve body that i had to drill out. that was on my 700R4 tranny.
