My wife reported a clunk while leaving the gas station, it would'nt move forward and just asted as is was mising the gear. Its an auto 4x4 with Dana LS rear.
I did have it in 4x4 twice in last week,I had this happen on my 86 Bronco just before the transfer case let go. How do these 4r100 act before letting go? I would appreciate any imput before replacing both.
Real responses, don't tell me I should just buy a new one, or the same canned responses, please.
the 4r100 has a very weak from the factory front and od planetary gear set, most likey they gave up the ghost. best bet is find a very good trans shop near you in CA, tell them you want all the hi per goodies from raybestos, sonnax, and axiom put in the that bad boy, then it will be as close as possible to bullit proof.
we are nj and i wish i could help you out from the shop i work in which is a site sponser, check us out at www.level10power.net just the code section we have can help any one showing what part fails causeing what code in the trans.
just the 4r has been known for factory weak guts, i would love to help you. good luck
No codes
Cannot repeat malfunction since sh brought it home.
I have driven it hard all afternoon, I have'nt had any problems with it myself.
I just used it to take my 9-10k trailer to dump tanks and put away in the north forty.
Fluid was just changed ,and has been done at 25k intervals
I will check around for service prices.
It clunked as it moved forward she let off, accelerated again, clunked, shifted to 2nd, clunk, stopped, went to park, put back in drive, could not duplicate. I have driven it trying hard to duplicate......nothing?
Freak occurance? I'm not sure, women don't seem to relate these types of things well.
I'm going to pretend it never happened........
thats a new one for me, normally a clunk from inside means gear sets are failing.
i would still get it checked by dropping the trans pan and see if some thing is inside and metal looking. but as you first stated i have also seen the shift forks in the t-case fail causeing clunks as the they allow the gears to slide around . it's hard to pin point from the east side and not hear or feel the clunk and from were when the cars on the west side .
The fluid was JUST changed? Check the wiring harness and make sure they didn't pull a connector loose. But then, you should get a blinking OD light for that.
4R100 is a good trany but does have issues with weak internals and with an old one like you have sooner or later a rebuild is gonna be needed...
That said, the transfer case is one of the more bullet proof units ever put under a truck...you have to work hard to break it... and in all my years off road with this transfer case the only issues I have ever had were the damned electronic shifter getting hung and not fully engaging or disengaging...
I suspect... the thought above about gear selector lever is probably the clunking experience your wife had...
If the gutz were trashed ...your heavy test usage would let you know something is wrong with the trans...when they go south they do it all the time not intermittently
Thanks for the responses, I have to just assume she had it in between notches on the selector?
I've looked and checked all I can without actually tearing the tranny down.
I will look about for prices for rebuild (I have a VERY good mechanic) and get references .
Til then, I'll just keep running it like I rented it.
