I replaced my original shocks with Bilsteins a few days ago. One question has been bothering me about the installation. I always thought that when you install shocks, you have to install them with the rod end (boot end) up. Even the original shocks were installed that way.
Now, the Bilsteins came out of the box with the rubber grommets and that metal shim spacer fitted so that the rod end would be on the bottom after you install them. The end with that metal spacer was mounted into the rod end of the shocks. In the F250, the end that has the thru bolts are on the bottoms. So after you install them, they are all rod end down.
This has been bothering me. Did I do something wrong or did Bilestein put the grommets on the wrong ends (all of them?) Note that those rubber grommets that go through the eye of the ends are very tight and can't easily be pulled out. I guess I can forcibly remove them with some WD40, elbow grease and maybe a puller, but should that be necessary?
Is it okay to mount shocks with the rod end down???
Note: The Bilstein shocks have the logos and some kind of holographic decals that are oriented so they can be seen and read right-side-up when installed this way (rod end down)
