Rotting Pumpkin

My rear diff cover looks to be on it`s last days, does any one have suggestions on a good, reasonably priced replacement? Also, the tag has these numbers on it: L73 10.5 8L02
S 409 0 Is this just a Sterling 10.5 inch Limited Slip and what about the other designations?

One more thing, the other tag says 75 W 140 Synthetic only should I use the additive for the LS or does the Synth already have it in? Thanks Dan

You could paint it orange

If you want a replacement, i would recommend a Mag-Hytec pan. It's bigger and will hold more fluid. I bet you tow, and that would be a great towing mod.

The L73 means it is a 3.73 Limited diff, and the other ones are mumbo-jumbo for the place and date it was built.

Limited Slip additive is usually not added into oil, at least with the Motorcraft oil. Do run 75w-140 synthetic, and don't add any additive no matter what oil. Take it for a spin, and do some figure-8's on a paved lot. if the inner tire chirps and tries to grab, add a little additive at a time JUST until that hopping sensation goes away.

EDIT- Wait, was that pun intended "Pumpkin"?

Why would you be cautious about putting the additive to it. What harm would the recommended amount do? Just curious.

pun intentions yes

I'll second that Magtec Cover. They are nice aluminum covers and the price is not that bad

If you put TOO MUCH additive in, you would essentially have an open differential, because there is so much additive, the clutches are so slippery that they don't grab anymore. Now you have to remove the fluid and try again, if you are at all interested in the Limited Grip. You can always add the additive if you need it.

They both have 0.35" thick gasket surfaces. I think the magtec is oversized and will hold more fluid than stock didnt see anything on the PML capacity.

That link brought up a Dodge cover but i found the Ford 10.5 here http://www.dieselperformanceparts.co...fm/item_id/252

I wonder if the extra fluid capacity is worth the added 70 bucks. Maybe if severe duty is what you encounter. I usually like to go overkill but not sure on this one.

Thats another item I'll need in a few months, I painted mine awile back and it's started to leak a little thru the rust, just a drop here and there. Seems to me I seen an aluminum cover somewhere for around $120.00 . Can't remember where.

Ya mine looks as though it won`t last another New England winter. The flaking is getting bad. What the heck is up with this crappy steel on these oilpans and covers. Saving a nickle here and there has put a bad rep on Ford

I purchased all three products from MAG HYTEC directly; front diff, 4R100 tranny pan and 10.5 rear diff. I bought them just after getting my truck. I am sure it is overkill for my truck, but I am happy with the benefits they provide, more fluid and better cooling. I have a trans temp gauge and my trans temp rarley goes over 170, and my rear diff temp rarley climbs higher either.

I DEF RECOMEND THEM
(MY OPINION)

The first time I painted mine, rust came back. Second time I buffed down to shinny metal prior to putting about 15 coats of the duplicolor bedliner on it. So far, it is still shinny black. But I don't think you can go wrong with the Mag hytec, having more oil capacity and a drain plug for future oil changes. Plus, they just look cool

Thanks for all the input. I did go for the Mag Hytec cover, they seem to be a cut above the rest. By the way Diesel Up, One of our site sponsors has a really good deal on them right now!
