I got the starter off last night after football practice and before it got dark and the trick or treaters started coming, I ended up using a combination of extentions and a flexible extention.
I hopefully will get time go get and put the new one in tonight, thanks for the posts.
Took it out and got it bench tested, starter tested fine, I got frustrated and took it to a shop, $70 later, I'm good to go, turned out to be a bad wire.

Internal wire, or one of the ones that connects to the outside?
I just put mine in yesterday. I pulled the engine mount bolts and jacked the engine up a couple inches went in over the frame after removing the wheel. Seems like alot of work but not that bad and its real easy after that.
I used a cornwell tools flex head ratchet and an 8" extension. Its a real small 1/4 drive size ratchet, but its got a 3/8 head in it. Have any of yall left the top bolt out? I did I just layed the loctite to the other 2. You think this is alright?
no top bolt very good way to break the bendix housing the reason for top bolt is not to make us use words rhat we hope our mothers don't hear us saying is the weight of the starter and the torque these thigs throw it takes alot to spin on and if you have ever seen one with the bolts loose you will see all types of movement up down side to side well enough just my 2 cents worth
I have replaced my starter 3 times now and the best tool I have found is justa simple wrench with the ratchet action box end. It takes a while, because you can only get a couple of clicks each time but it did the trick for me.
I had the same problem replacing the starter on my '87 F250 auto. I pushed it up on ramps and used a 15"? extension on a 3/8 rachet. It has to be an exact size as to long or to short will interfear with somthing on the rachet end.
