are you removing the tuner when you go to the dealer? quit idling so much. thats about as bad as running out of fuel. that will shorten the life of this truck and your wallet along with your happiness.
My truck is an '06 but the manufacture date is 9/21/05. Does this mean my check engine light will come on if I unplug? I thought it was just CA models that did that. Mine only smokes when I step on it.
Wizz......your light WILL come on. I have an '06 also. If I'm not mistaken, all trucks that are '06 models are 50 state emmission. I unplugged my EGR on mine (my trucks build date is 11/17/05) and the light came on. I didn't get a chance to see if it made any difference in performance as that light annoyed me to the point I just plugged it back in. I'll just wait till I get my SCT and then solve that little EGR problem.
my 05 with 36000 has beenblowing black smoke like crazy and feels like its not going to accel. but not all the time happens alot after i idle alot...how do u unplug the egr my bullydog says codes po404 and uo or vo407 but dealer cant find any codes help please
On 05 ex with 6.0 I unplugged the value and the check engine light came on . I disconnected the batteries The light stays off for the first start then it back on again. Any help would be appreciated
WillesSD250, Thanks for the info. I have the SuperChips Tuner and I don't think it has any way to fix that problem so I try to figure out some way to fool it. Any body have any Ideas?
Someone surely has an annswer to make the engine light go out on 05 with EGR valve unplugged.. What wires to cutt what two to hook together ????
cutting wires won't solve your problem. Most likely unplugging the EGR without cleaning it won't solve your problem either. It takes very very little carbon buildup to make your valve stay open and cause all kinds of performance problems. An SCT can make your light go out because it takes the EGR out of the strategy, but it won't CURE your problem.
Tigertank---are you clearing your codes with your Bullydog before you take it in??? it may not recure immediately. If your check engine light is on then there must be a code to have set it. I'm not a bullydog fan or owner, so I can't comment on their product or it's accuracy. I do know they are EGR codes though.
thanks for the replys first i idlebecause in the construction field i need my lights and radios on plus i constantly move also i dont pay 4 the fuel next i dont clear the codes but no ck engine ever comes on thats whats confusing...
well tiger if you dont qiut idling your 6.0 you will always have issues. you need to find another way to run the lights and radios. these trucks were not meant to idle.
As BTH has said idling these trucks for long periods is hard on the EGR and engine do to the emission control strategy. If you must idle for long periods (more than 5 minutes) then you need to do the High Idle Mod to help prevent some of the problems that long term idling can cause.
It sounds like you may have a bad EGR valve, the only way to find out is have the dealer check the truck. BTW if you are removing the tuner before you go to the dealer or disconnecting the battery cables this will cause problems for the dealer to be able to locate some of the codes and/or accurately trouble shoot the problem.
What does excessive idling do exactly? Clog the EGR? Any other issues as a result of idling too much? What is considered idling too much?
Also, if the EGR was unplugged and was working when unplugged, are the idling issues a non-issue?
Lot's of people talk of doing this High Idle Mod. I've got an '06 that when I have it in park, the brake is set the truck idles up on it's own after about 2 minutes. when I release the brake, touch the accelerator or the brake pedal it drops back down to the normal idle. Is this the same as the High Idle Mod or are the two different? If so could someone explain it to me.

This high idle you are speaking of is where the engine automatically idles up to 900 RPMs when it is cold.
The one you hear everyone else talking about brings the engine up higher, to 1200 RPMs. There is also one more high-idle mod that allows the idle to adjust itself based on charging need/draw. I believe that one allows it to fluctuate from 1200 to 2400, based on need. These last two mods are listed in detail (along with instructions for making the mod), in the tech folder. The tech folders are off-line for a little while, but they'll be back.

Excessive idiling, can cause wet stacking, which is unburned fuel deposting on the valve stems, causing them to stick, and if they stick open the piston can strike them and damage engine components. Wet stacking occurs because a diesel engine cools down while idling. This is the reason for the high idle mod, which due to the increased idle RPM allows the engine to stay warm enough to prevent wet stacking.
The EGR valve can still be clogged with deposits when it is unhooked.
Excessive idling wastes fuel at a rate of 1/2 to 1 gallon per hour.
Extended idling is illegal in many towns, cities and municipalities do to excessive noise and pollution.
