After reading the threads about the egr and having some minor problems of my own with smoking and rough running. I took my egr out and cleaned it, put it back in and had the same problems. I remember reading that one of you guys unpluged it. So I did and the problems seam to have gone away. Is it good run the truck with out the egr or should i replace it? And if I replace it should I replace the cooler and other related items with it? Thanks for your help.

Reason: correct some punctual errors
have you gotten any codes. refresh my memory on the smoke please. what did the egr look like? if you have unplugged it and the problems seemed to have left drive it some more with it unplugged and verify it some more.

BowyTieHatr,
Thanks for your reply. No I haven't gotten any codes, I really don't know of a good sourse in my area for diesel repair. There has been no light in the dash indcating any problems. But anyway, the smoke was white and black, starting white and then as it picked up rpm's it would turn black. I wasn't sure if running it without the egr plugged would cause any other problems. The egr was pretty well coroded, I cleaned it off the best I could before putting it back together. By the wat I think your ythe one that sent me the pics, they were a big help.

nah i wasnt the one that sent pics. just to let you know the egr valve is rather expensive. what is your mileage? i have seen an egr stick open and cause tons of grayish smoke roll out of the tailpipe and when this happens the truck will not go 15mph seriously. also have seen black smoke roll out due to the lack of boost causing a overfueling issue but the truck will move decently. how dirty was the valve? you could still have a sticking valve. when it starts smoking badly pull the egr valve out and see if it is even cracked open, go ahead and replace it. whats your mileage. egrs are under the 5/100000
I have 61,000. The egr was some-what caked up, the openings in it were not completly shut but it seamed like the valve was stuck open just a little. And it may still be I tried to get it all out but I'm not sure I did. The truck runs fine with egr plugged up when its cold it seams like it doesn't act up until its warm. Yea, my 04' only had a 3/36000
all diesels have a 5 year 100000 mile warranty. if the egr was stuck open then i am feeling better about you needing a new egr valve. although you need to find a dealer you have a $100 deductible for almost all of that engine. take it in and good luck.
no it wont hurt anythng. anymore it is just someones preference to do or not to do. unless it is a late 05 and up or a california truck no light will come on.
Hello. The EGR in my 07 250 has been unplugged for about a month and I've seen about 1 more MPG and quicker off the start, so I'd like to keep it this way, but the check light is on . Is there a way to jumper it out? I didnt plan on getting a chip so I'll just live with it unless someone has a great fix. Thanks for all the great help everyone.
Same problems in mine were cured with EGR replacement, but also with replacement of the throttle plate (?) and sensor wire with the plate. I think the plate part is only in the 04 but I could be wrong.
my 05 with 36000 has beenblowing black smoke like crazy and feels like its not going to accel. but not all the time happens alot after i idle alot...how do u unplug the egr my bullydog says codes po404 and uo or vo407 but dealer cant find any codes help please
