If taking out two degrees kills too much performance I'll throw my wide-band o2 meter on the thing and really see were it's at.

Thanks again for all the information!

Oh, schnap, if you got a wideband O2, hook that badboy up. Nothing tells you whats going on like what's actually going on.

Lemme see what twelve degrees BTDC does. If the engine doesn't ping and can pull my test hill close to 65 MPH.. I'll be calling it a day!

Cam for 300 EFI 1992 2 wheel dr.

I hope someone can help me out. I just recently got a '92 150 2 wheel drive with the 300 EFI. I plan on putting duals from the cat back. (I love the EFI exhaust manifold!) I also want to install a cam...but...Crane claims that they are not compatible with the computer. Is that true? It seems that you guys are running aftermarket cams in your EFIs.

I plan on doing some light towing (20 ft. self contained camper). My '78 302 succumbed to 300,000 miles and extreme rust. (Upper Michigan winters..argh!!)

Any help would be appreciated. I'd like to show up those darn chebby drivers.

Thanks,
Duche400

You have the same engine as me and they recomended the cam I'm running and all is well. My truck even passed the CA roller smog test with flying colors.

Thumbs up 503901 cam in 300 EFI

Hi, duche400 again, I see people running two different cams. The 503901 and the 503905. How much of a power gain did you get with yours? And, do you know the difference between it and the 503905 cam??

I've had the 240 in a '70 years ago, and a 300 in a '76. The '76 had a 3.50 posi and a three on the tree. It was more powerful than the '92. I figured that the EFI would be enough, but I need more...don't we all????

Thanks for your valued opinion!!!

Vince, I read the whole post...now. It really seems worth it. I read on one of the threads that the EFI manifolds flow about as well as full length headers. Is there truth to that? It sure would save me some money.

nothing flows like a header, they are tuned for optimal scavanging, heat removal and flow.

the EFI manifolds are in essence a factory header (but are cast iron). they flow 10x better than the stock log manifold but not like a regular header.

Cool! I can't wait to drive my rig from Ca to KS and back next September. I bet I save and hour a day in drive time just not slowing down so much for hills.

About the headers, I think that long tube headers would give a few HP but the stock manifolds are pretty damn good.

For what I use my truck for, I THINK I'm happy now!

Okay I set the initial advance to twelve degrees BTD and the pinging is gone.

The truck has more power than at ten degrees BTD.

I don't know about fuel milage yet.

Hopping up my 300

Okay I've read this whole thread and I'm pretty sure that I should keep my van with its 300 and C-6, and just hop up the engine. I've already got it set up for towing including Bilstein shocks. So it only makes sense to make it a mean towing machine. Let's see if I have this right. I need .....

Crane cam 503901
new plugs/wires/coil

advance the timing to 12º BTCD
reset the EEC-IV
keep the stock EFI manifold
towing muffler and larger diameter exhaust from cat back (maybe clean the cat too)

More questions...

Will the engine run hotter? Do I need a higher capacity radiator? electric fans?
Will I need hotter spark plugs? hotter coil?
Do I need new push rods?

I expect that my gross combined weight of van and trailer will be around 13,000. Am I realistic in thinking that the hopped up straight six will make me happy? I love my van except that it desparately needs more power to pull the trailer.

13,000 LBs. seems way high to make any kind of happy with a 4.9L engine and a half ton rated van. Add a tall trailer with some frontal area and I don't think it's a go.
13,000 LBs. is roughly 4,000 LBs. more weight than my rig and I think way over what you can safely pull/handle/stop.

Compaddict, thanks for brainstorming with me on this one. I'm happy to be told no it can't be done before I spend the money. Afterall, I have very precious cargo that ride in the van.

Take a look at this website http://miklasfamilycamping.blogspot.com At the bottom of the page, is a travel trailer we bought new in 2000. At first we pulled it with a 1995 E-150 4.9L, E4OD, 3.55:1 (not pictured). The van/trailer rig scaled weight was 12,000#, while the trailer had a 4900# GVWR. Sadly, the GCWR for that van was 10,000#. My first trip was 1200 miles from PA to FL. It cruised pretty decently at 55/60, but 45 and 2nd gear was the norm for mountainous terrain. The green van in the picture was the second van to pull that trailer, which was a 1994, E-350 460 E4OD, 4.09:1.

So here I am putting a rig back together and what I have right now is this 1995 E-150 with 4.9L, C-6, and 3.55:1 differential. It pulled the trailer home, but did it slowyly. I am keeping in mind that the trailer was also empty. By the time that it is loaded for a trip, it will be pushing 6000#.

So I guess I'm in the market for another E-350 Chateau with a 7.5L or 5.4L V-8, or 6.8L V-10.
