Fires in Cabazon

Man, I saw on the news the fires going on down there in Cabazon and Banning area. My heart goes out to the families of the brave young Forest Service folks who lost there lives, and also to the one survivor in the hospital. I hope they catch the SOB who started that fire. They need to be punished to the full extent the law will allow.
I hope all of you FTE folks are okay. Stay safe. T

It's both sad and disgusting that an arson lit fire kills firefighters just trying to do their job. Just as bad as any random murder. My Dad was a fireman for 28 years so I really feel for their families.

It's also amazing and extremely scary how fast a fire can accelerate and/or change directions when pushed by the wind. My Dad told me it's a deep, rushing, crackling sound which he said sounded, "angry and hungry".

Fire, a useful servant yet fearful master.

Fire is scary fast moving. I worked during the cedar fires in SOCAL a few years ago, as a police officer not a fireman. We watched fire change course on a dime right after the firemen got done moving their equipment to the "NEW" path in hopes of heading it off.

I had heard that 4 firemen died so far and they expected a fifth to die soon.

Sad

The guy that started the cedar fire got probation for 5 years. Not a day in jail.

killed 15 people burned 422 square miles and destroyed more than 2,400 homes. Estimates of the damage from the wildfire – the largest in state history – top $800 million.

Judge said he didn't see a reason to make him lose his job or become a burden on society.

And we wonder where the problem in our society is.

I've spent alot of years fighting fires. Including a significant time down there in your neck of the woods working on The Angeles NF on hotshot crews and fire engine companies. I find that an interesting statement about the useful servant. I like it.
The sound is an interesting description too. I always considered it as the sound of a freight train when a fire is really running. Especially in very heavy brush or timber. Almost deafening if you happen to be close enough (or should I say too close). It can be a spooky sound. It can be kind of self minimizing.
It's very exciting to do that type of work, and do I dare say "fun"?. But it should never come at the cost of lives. These folks were doing something that they really enjoyed, and I'm sure were driven with a sense of urgency to protect and save life and property. Very noble. They were stepping up go in when their neighbors were in need. Willing even to risk their own lives in the process.
We are losing some of our finest people here in this country, fire, police etc. And every day over seas as well.
God bless ALL of our heros.

Oh man, this post just made my day. I wish I wasn't on shift today. I think I could use a stiff drink after reading this.

I live in Tujunga which is right at the mouth of Big Tujunga Canyon. Did you work the Altadena fire in 1993? That was the last major brush fire my Dad worked. I still have the T-shirt he gave me, 'Fire Storm 93' with a silk screened map of the many fires burning at the same time that year and a list of all the participating departments.

I believe I've heard fire described as sounding like a freight train, it's faster moving though!

BTW, that line is part of a quote, "Government is like fire, a useful servant yet a fearful master.

Yeah,
I couldn't believe it when I woke up yesterday to what I thought was just a gray sky morning. Being near Hemet which is just the other side of the mountain we really got swamped in with all the ash. Matter of fact I didnt know what was going on or where it was so I drove out to make sure it wasnt close.
It really makes me angry about both of those fires andwe should def. do more when it come to prosecuting them. Its really acutally amazing that theyve been able to work it so effectively, that area hasnt burnt in quite some time so it must have been absolutely raging. My heart and my thanks goes out to all of the guys who are still out there right now.
