Hello everyone. First time typer, long time reader...

Anyway, I have a 1978 Ford F700 dump that I purchased last winter for plowing. It has a 5+2 tranny and a 10' plow. When I bhought it, the guy told me that it had a 360 in it. When I took it in for work, all of the parts were too big. My mechanic hunted for a block number but was unable to locate any. We tried various size parts and found that 330 parts fit. The truck wont rev very high and has a top speed of about 55 on the highway, (pretty sad). I am constantly changing gears when plowing because it has no torque. The truck has a holley 4bbl on it. First, does a 330 sound correct, is it a small block or big block and what else could I do to help her out a little? Any advice would be appreciated.

Welcome to FTE!

That 330 is not a power house, but it'll take all the abuse you can dish out. You want more torque? In my opinion, your best bet is to find a 391 FT engine out of another big Ford. It'll have a longer stroke and a bigger bore, you'll get more torque.

As you've discovered, properly identifying these engines isn't the easiest. Most passenger car and light truck FE's had an ID tag on the distributor hold down bolt, but I haven't seen one of those in a long time. They're often discarded. Good luck!

Ford F-700

I just bought an F-700, flatbed dump truck. I think mine must be a 1979 model, and it has the 6.1L gasoline engine (370Cu In). I am looking for a distributor for mine. I have the five speed transmission, and a single speed rear axle. I had not heard of a 370 or a 330 engine. I am used to 360, 390, etc. Good luck on your 330 engine. I would also suggest going to a bigger engine. There should be plenty of those 370's available, but I don'e kdnow about their condition. Ralph King, king32536@***.net

The 370 is a "385" series truck engine, including the truck model 429, and the car 429, and car/light truck 460. Also known as the "Lima" engines, after the Lima, Ohio engine plant IIRC.

The OP in this thread still comes by it seems, but has not posted in over a year, got rid of his 330 for a 361, and this thread is 3 years old....

For info on the 370, try the new "Large Truck" forum:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum232/

Or the 385 forums, two above the FE forums.

Your distributor probably has a governor on it, correct? You may be able to find one through:

F-700 6.1L engine parts

Thanks. I found the distributor (48-2873) at the local NAPA store. Rotor button (FA144) and distributor cap (FA134), ignition coil (IC21) all at the same place. They were all the perfect fit, and had the same Ford numbers on the distributor as my old one. Now to see if I can get the engine running! Ralph King, king32536@***.net
