The other night I was going upstairs to put my kids in bed and I could hear the tv in the rec-room going. It was right at the beginning of the World Series. As I got to the top stair (in my socks mind you... no noise) I heard the singer (Anita Baker, I think) start in on the National Anthem. I took a few more steps and rounded the corner to find my 8 year old son, alone in front of the TV, standing up with his hand over his heart. He said, "Dad, hold still!" I believe it was the most powerful moment of my career as a father. I may not have done much right, but on this one, I get a good mark.
At the beginning of the football season I was at a friend's house with another friend to watch the Pittsburgh/Miami game in high def. Just before the Anthem was sung my wife called. I asked her to let me call her back in a few minutes, hung up, and then the song started. I stood up. The other two guys just laid there on the couches. Since they work for me I made them get up. I mean, really, it was high def! It was as close to being there as you can get, and even if it wasn't it just seems wrong not to simply stand up out of respect for your country - it is, after all, YOUR country.
I'm sure I'll forget a bunch of the little moments of raising my 5 kids, but the image of my son in front of that tv, all on his own, because he has learned a deep respect for HIS country will never leave me.
Thats what we need in this great Counrty...more Patriotism. Good job man! I had a good friend of mine who owned an exhaust shop we would hang out in and when the anthem came on the radio, if you didn't stop what you were doing and at least show respect, well, lets just say you wouldn't be hanging out in that exhaust shop for long.
You know, I have taught my kids many things including songs about America, taking tha hat off while standing during the anthem, etc. What a great moment to witness as a parent.
I never thought of doing it while watching TV. That is a great point to ponder. I guess you have been doing something right and I have been doing something wrong!
I think we are going to watch a ball game real soon and I will make a point of everyone standing in the living room with their hands over their heart.
I've never seen or heard of anyone standing for the anthem on tv. If you'd told me to stand up, I would have told you where to go.

That's sad, really sad.
I know I didn't waste my 2yrs., 9 mos., and 22 days serving in the Army, but people like you make me think I might have wasted just a few seconds of that time standing up for YOUR rights.
That's sad, really sad.
mjunk.........if nothing else, you will go forward in life knowing you have started a young citizen out the right way.
Gives me a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye!
God love you, you,ve done it well my friend.

That's sad, really sad.

Do I not have to have the right to stay seated in my own house? In public I'll stand, but no one will to tell me what to do in my own house. You can stand if it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, but i don't see it as being disrespectful by staying seated. But thats JMHO

I never wear a hat, anywhere. But it wouldn't really be any of your business if I did wear one at my dinner table.
