I was wondering if the following occurance was normal. I have a 58 ford and when i turn on the headlights they dim when the engine rpm's go down and brighten when I accelerate. Is this noraml or do i have an electrical probelm. Tahnks again....
That's normal for a generator. A lot of guys swap the generator for an alternator because they find that annoying - whatever you think you have to have, but a generator system in good repair is as dependable as an alternator.
Advantage of an gennie is that it will charge a completely dead battery. An alt needs some current to produce a charge.
Excellent choice. I was having no luck keeping one wire alts running for much time b4 they failed.
I found an upsized 12v generator from the Y on another larger series truck (I think 30a), put in a fresh regulator, and have no dimming even with the halogen replacements.
I did have dimming, actual blinking of my lights from a short that kicked that breaker out on the light switch. Did the whole harness over and cured all.
I have only one concern now using a generator, that I may not be able to upgrade the ignition to a Pertronics Ignitor II (see Y Forum).
I may like original, but the power gains and efficiency of new ignition systems is undeniable.
Mine had a generator with a large pulley on it. It did the same thing with the lights dimming at idle.I had some spair generators with smaller pullys,I just put a smaller pulley on it and that fixed it.I have had very little trouble with it.I am also concerend about the electronic conversion I had bought one and havent installed it yet.I am going to try it and see what happens.
I am also putting in an electronic ignition in probably this weekend. I am told that it will work just fine. I will let yall know what happens when i do it.
