well im looking into replacing the TC (Torque Converter), do i have alot of options? trucks all stock, im looking for a quick fix, TC seems to be slipping, should i throw a stock TC back in or is there something better for a little bit of increas in price?
im still thinking of just getting a fluid change on the transmission, but seems a little more cost efficiant if i just replace with a new TC and then have new oil added. (note, i dont know the last time its been changed, i just bought this truck a little over a month ago, has 129k on it now) is there a good additive i can throw into the trans fluid to help TC lock up? or from slipping so much?
and whats some singns of a warn out transmission? iv never had one fail on me. and mine seems to shift just fine, just feels like a manual car where ur ridding the clutch some times. and the few moments when everything is working great, and im in 4th gear doing 70 at 2k RPM's, the O/D light isent flashing, as soon as the TC slips though it starts flashing again, and i have to have the engine at 2500 RPM's to keep the truck going 70 in 4th.
and what can a TC replacement cost at a local shop ruffly?
BTS AND FACTORY TECH, THERE ARE ALSO A FEW OTHERS, prices about 1200 and up depending on model, though, i read the BTS will match stall speed to HP rating,
helping to achive shift and lock up faster. you might as well get the matching valve body for about 300 bucks, it increases shift firmness, and lock up also. and all around better than stock.
Are you sure it is the TC?? Your TC should lock in 4th gear. This should elimiate any slippage. Transmission slippage will cause the engine to have to surge to maintain speed (much like a slipping clutch on a manual). Going on your description of the problem, I'd bet you have a worn clutch pack in your tranny.
well the thing is when it is locked wich is almost never, it chugs along just fine, and the O/D light isent flashing, though some times when i get to a hill or i push on the peddle alot more it can some times just rev up with out the truck really going proportionaly to the engine RPM's and other times it will work just fine, but very few times dose it ever work fine.
though im no auto tranny expert so im just guessing or hopping it would be the TC rather then something with the tranny.

this is another reason why i would like to just take a rebuild from BTS with a new TC and be done with it. but my dad tells me if the tranny is shifting fine then just replace the TC, or poor some fluids in the tranny that are supost to help with locking the TC? i dont know how well that will work, but he was kinda looking at a cheeper fix where i could possibly get a few thousand more miles out of the truck? before doing any pricey mechanicle work on the truck.
so is there any such thing as an additive to the tranny fluid that will help the transmission lock or the tc lock up ? or work better? and i know some one told me in another post that just getting the fluid changed out could help. well as far as surges, i dont feel any of that, it just feels like its slipping. like its still smooth shifting, and it goes into all the gears, but something is slipping.
also, if a code reader is hooked up to the truck, how many error codes can come off the trany? and how specific are they? because with the O/D light flashing some times, im sure or i gues there could be some error code?
i just bought this truck a little over a month ago and so i dont know when the last change was done, and the truck has 129k on it.
I recommend changing ALL your fluids(tranny, transfer case, motor oil,
brake fluid, power steering, differentials). Here's some great info on maintenance
