Low Oil Pressure When Cold
The low oil pressure light is coming on in my 99 Ranger 4.0. It only comes on when the vehicle has sat overnight in below, or close to freezing temperatures.
Once it warms up, it shuts off.
Any thoughts?

It could be (and most likely is) just a bad sender but you should not ignore it. For what an oil pressure sending unit costs compared to the damage that low oil pressure can cause, its a no brainer. Replace the sender and see if the problem is still there. Good luck.

well if you replace the guage make sure to t the line and install both sending units. if you totally cut out the ford one you will get a check guage light all the time. i t'd my truck and put in a mechanical guage and the ford one

Probably the oil pressure sending unit, like the guys have said. Is the gauge also reading low when the trouble light is lit????
Our oil pressure is often refferred to as an "idiot gauge", as it's wired to sorta act like a idiot light, in that any oil pressure above about 7psi, causes it to read about midscale. Thats an awful thing to do to guys that like to read real gauges!!!! lol
Any strange ticking or knocking going on when the warning light is on????
If so, it might indicate the oil pressure really is low, if not it's likely a sensor/sending unit, problem.
Maybe a faulty or out of spec oil filter bypass valve. Have you changed your oil filter or filter brand, just prior to this happening????
Are you running heavier weight oil than specified????
