Could a Technician or someone experienced with turbos please give me an idea why one of the vanes is discolored on the turbo pictured? Is this rust or??
I changed the air filter (stock Ford/Donaldson) this morning on my 6.0 and saw this:
That is marking paint, you'll find some form or fashion of it on just about any 6.0 compressor wheel. It looks a little funny because it has been smeared around by high speed air.
i just got my 2006 ps back from ford for some warranty work, they checked the turbo while they were in there, they told me to get that k and n intake system off of there and put the factory air system back on, my turbo impeller looks the same as yours, they called that dusted, because the veins look like they have a little dust on them, ford told me that is the finish starting to come off the impeller, from fine dust passing thru the k and n system, its like the impeller being sandblasted when that dust hits the impeller spinning at sonic speeds, whick causes the finish to come off. so i put the factory air system back on, am sending this junk back to k and n, but that pic is exactly the way my turbo veins looked when i was changing the system out the other day...............

Well, as badly as I hate K and N air filters I must say that the wheel is not discolored like that because of dusting. The black marks on the wheel fin bodies is buildup from the crankcase ventilation, not dust marks. Dust marks will erode the edge of the fins also, not just the inner section of the compressor wheel. The black coloring you see in this picture will come right off with a plastic brush and parts washing fluid.
