Alternator

On the way home from work my battery light came on. Seemed to be on at idle or when RPM was above 2000. Light was off at intermediate RPM's (800-2000). Voltmeter was steady and reading in the middle of the gauge. I'm guessing my ALT is dying. Is that a correct diagnosis, or could it be the battery?

alternator is a good bet. if it was the battery it would drain and not crank to start. alternator will run truck after it is started (power wise). if the lght comes and goes, then alternator is good possibliity. if it stays on too long, then you dont have charge and the battery will eventually run donw. dont pull the wires to test, that is a bad idea. you can put a volt meter across the battery and see that is has possibly 12.5 volts when off, and will show about 13.5 volts when motor is running.

I guess I'll pick up an alternator. Does it matter if I have a 95 or 130 amp? or can I replace a 95 with a 130 and vice versa?

either is fine. the 130 is about an inch thicker so you can tell them apart.
