Radiator Leak '95 Taurus

Hello,

I have a 1995 Ford Taurus w/ a 3.8L V6 that has a radiator leak near the top right-hand corner where the plastic and aluminum seam joins. It is relatively minor right now, as there is no evident leak on the ground when the vehicle is stationary, but coolant is apparent on the plastic fins on the shroud near this area. I am somewhat hesitant about radiator stop leak additives, and would like to know if anyone else has experienced this sort of problem. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

This is a very common failure on the Taurus radiators.

The crimped connection between between the plastic and the aluminum fails. A local radiator shop might be able to recrimp it, but you most likely will have to replace the radiator to correct the fault.

Stop-leak products will not help this particular problem.

Is there a seal between this seam? The old radiator in this same vehicle leaked as well, but from a different area. The one I replaced it with was from a salvage yard, and seemed to look good as there were no leaks coming from the car from which it was pulled (the car still had antifreeze in it). Well, I suppose I now know there are some things that you should just buy brand new, and not from the junkyard! Thanks for your reply.

You are exactly right about a Taurus radiator being a part that should only be replaced with new.

Autozone offers liftetime warranties on their radiators (I believe they sell GDI brand).
