Hey guys and gals...Im not a mechanic but I am an a/v guy...Ive inherited a mint original 74 Truck (I call it a green train) extended with full size box from my inlaws. I need to install a stereo system in it for the wife...AM only doesnt cut it...can anyone help...dont want to autopsy it to discover what to do!
Sorry about that...
Im looking for wiring schematics for the truck, specifically the original "am" only radio, Im assuming since I can only see 2 wires that one is an accessory and the other is for the radio illumination...Im curious without pulling it apart and breaking the connector if thats indeed what they are, where they come from prior to the under the dash connection etc...I will run seperate lines to the battery for ground and also to power up the new stereo but I also heard that because my truck has no frills, that I have to be careful with the alternator regulator and that its not overtaxed...Im not a mechanic...do you know of any restrictions for putting new equipment in? Is this possible if Im only runing a simple 13.8v amp?
there is no illumination wire on these trucks. there is a wire for power and a wire for ground (may be grounded through the antenna) and then usually 2 wires per speaker and id assume there is just one speaker
Thanks for your help, I will splice into the line and protect the connection to remove the radio and use accordingly. I'll throw a volt tester on there to double check. Thanks again.
yea, let me know if you have any problems. i had to run a wire through the firewall to the bat and install an inline fuse on my truck. for some reason i wasnt meeting the power requirements through the fuse box.
Thanks again Matt. I did just that, I had to run a batt line for a brake controller so I spliced off from it for radio memory, used the access line to the radio for the same purpose, I also ran an independant grnd as well (not much room to get at things in that dash) for ease reasons. All works fine.
My problem now, for another forum thread, is my charging system cannot keep up with my newly wired horse trailer and the truck head & running lights et al (stereo disconnected) at night...and I know nothing about the alternator and regulator at this time, havent done any testing, I do know its all stock parts...
I guess thats for another thread...got any suggestions in the meantime?
The wiring for the radio is pretty basic. The yellow plug by the lighter can be used for power. The speaker wiring will be scratch built by you or ? The door speakers are easy to install but holes need to be drilled in the door & door post - Use rubber grommets here and possibly wrap the wires or route them thru tubing ALSO. Makes a neater job when the door is open. I'd get the alternator rebuilt to higher amps or buy a new one with at least 100 amps - AND install a 2d battery with an isolator between the alternator and the batteries. The "extras" can be wired from the 2d battery and it's fuse block. Sounds complicated but it's really simple to do. GOOD LUCK / ENJOY ! [edit]> The wiring can be routed thru the firewall next to the main 1 in front of the steering wheel - thru the big rubber grommet.
