Anybody have a computer that runs on Linux exclusively?
What's the downside?
Most of my computers are Linux only. Only have one Windows machine, and it sat for 3 years, till I found a game I liked. So first downside, is the lack of games. Next steep learning curve, depending on how your planning on using it (not at all for just email and word processing, type stuff). Third downside, entails people who have NO clue what OS independent and open standard files only, means. (you will still have people who try to send you wmv/wma type files that they think are cool, and wonder why you don't respond).
Jake said it best. Thats the only downside to running exclusive linux. Although you can get lots of windows emulator programs ( I think thats what they are called) to run almost any windows app you need.
The reason I asked is that my son sent me a Ubuntu disk. I have a laptop, an older hp that I use in my garage and I thought I might like to try it. I'd hate to loose all my bookmarks and emails etc.
I always hated windows, but this latest version is not really troublesome so I'm on the fence and feeling ignorant. I have no idea what will appear on the screen if in install Ubuntu.
The computer is used mainly for internet and email...
Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated. Thanks.

Bookmarks are easily exported and imported. Can't help with the emails, as I had to go web based, due to being on the go, and needing access from multiple locations.
Is this a disk he burned, or is it a pair in an envelop? Ubuntu has a live cd, that would allow you to run it, without overwriting your stuff. Ask him whether it was the install, live or both cd's he sent you!
No gaming support is the sole reason I'm not 100% on the linux bandwagon. If I could run games on it, I'd quit 'licensing' windows and own my own operating system.
There is only one way to learn something new, at one time years back you just learned how to navigate windows. Linux never has actually evolved into what makers hope for in the personal PC world. this is because of people who play games and stuff. In the business world, Linux is still in its infancy, it is not usually used for mission critical servers that need .99999 uptime. It is a excellent OS when it is used with grid technology. So for most companies that need close to 100% uptime, including all I have worked for they rely on Unix.
I believe Linux is a viable alternative to Windows, for the everyday Joe, it has enough applications to get through life, all are open source apps such as word processing, browser..etc. For the person who is frustrated with Windows and is not going to let their fear of the unknown get to them, installing Linux is the way to go. For the other group of people who hate Windows and are too afraid to try Linux, they usually buy a Macintosh (also a good piece of hardware)
my motto: back it up, re-install it, if you mess it up then re-install it again... it's that easy.
