Hi all, I have a few problems with my 90 Ranger that maybe some of you know something about. First of all, it is a 2.9 auto 4x4. It runs great when I first start it and for the first 10-15 minutes after that, but then it starts to putter and has very slow accelleration. Also its getting about 12 mpg, which I think is low, because my 91 3.0 gets 18-19. Any suggestions?
If you have no codes, and you are unable to find the problem, you might want to look at the fuel pressure regulator. A friend had a similar problem, with no codes, but there was a pronounced black smoke after the warm-up period. He threw lots of parts at it, but it was the fpr that fixed it. I hate to tell you to throw a part at it, without diagnosing first...do you have the black smoke out the tail-pipe? If not, I'd guess it's not the fpr. With his, it seems the fpr was dumping too much fuel in the engine.
Sometimes a cracked coil will act like that. Go to where it is dark, turn off lights and open the hood. See if fire is escaping. When the coil is cool the fire doesn't escape, but when it gets hot, they can give you a light show if cracked.
