steering column swap

I'm in the process of swapping the cab from a 73 F250 2wd to a 73 F250 4x4 (highboy). The 2wd is/was a manual and the 4x4 is an automatic so I want to keep the auto steering. It seems the linkage arm from the trans doesn't connect to the shift arm with a standard bolt and nut. Do I need to worry about this since I need to remove the shift arm anyway before pulling/pushing(?) the steering column through the cab? I read a previous thread and it doesn't sound like removing the steering column is the easiest task. Anything else I need to be aware of?

Hope this 1st time user and complete novice is making sense. Thanks.

In the pic above you can see that the shift rod goes through a rubber gromet in the shift arm on the steering column, just use a pair of channel locks to remove the rod, hook one jaw of the pliers to the shift arm, then the other on the end of the shift rod, then just use the pliers to push it through the grommet, you should not have to remove the arm to get the column out of the cab,

Sounded easy but I couldn't get enough access with the hood and brake booster in the way. Also, I had difficulty keeping one side of the channel locks on the back side (rounded part) of the linkage. Anyway, I just detached the linkage from the tranny arm and will try again once I get better access.

Thanks.
