99F150, sure your guy can get good results if he puts the same effort in as Doug does at bama, but the programer is still better. Let me explain, on the newer programers, you can get up to 3 different tunes in 1 programer, you can also down load changes from your pc to your programer (xcaliber for one). programers can make corrections for tire and gears size swaps. The programer plugs to the computer port under the dash, push a couple of buttons, unplug it and your done. Just that easy to convert back to stock settings for emissions testing if need be. For a chip, in most cases you have to pull the computer, scrape off the contact points and reinstall it. it carries one tune, if you don't get the contact points cleaned well, you have to do it again, a real hassle. The jet chip I put on my 99 F-150 fried my computer, jet said it wasn't installed right, my mechanic who installed it said it was the wrong program for my truck, in the end it cost me 500.00$ for a new computer. I never heard of anyone frying a computer with a programer, if it's the wrong program, the vehicle just doesn't run right, it's not a parasite piggibacking directly on your computer. A repitable chip can be good, it just doesn't have all the advantages of a programer.

Ok, so a programer still won't allow tuning on the fly as you drive? Does the Tuner flash the trucks computer with up to two or three different tunes or are the tunes in a seperate box being fed to the computer via cable?

Thanks for the help, I am green yet when it comes to tuning these computers.

No tuning on the fly. The tuner will hold the programs, and flash each tune to your truck as you need it, downloading the stock tune the first time you tune it. If you want to change tunes, youll have to turn off the truck and flash it again with a different tune.

Ok, So the tuner is kinda like a flash drive for storage. Someone loads a predefined tune to it and then you connect it to the truck and download that new tune to truck and unplug the tuner? The seller of the tuner is still the one writing the tune?

Thanks Dan

Pretty much yes, but in our case, where we are the "seller" of the BamaChips tuner, Doug at BamaChips actually does all the tuning. We just market the truck tuners for him.

99F150, I have the Bama XCal2 and if you get it you wont be dissapointed. Doug is the best there is at writing programs for the Rangers and his customer service is the best there is. I bought my tuner from Bob and programmed by Doug and when I had a small annoying high idle problem on one tune Doug was immediate to reply to my email with a new tune attatched that I downloaded to the tuner and problem was gone and the power is great.

Thank you very much for all the info. I still have one question, can the tuner or chip keep the computer in closed loop all the time? My truck has the 2.5L four and runs at wide open throttle alot when on the highway at 70mph or higher. Here in South Dakota with a 75mph speed limit if you run under 80 you gat run over.

It will run closed loop at WOT anyway, anything under WOT, you will want open loop. All the same, if you REALLY WANT closed loop all the time, we could probably do that for you wtih the BamaChips tuners.

Maybe I said it backwards, I want the sensors and computer to determine the right settings all the time instead of it going into the mode wher the sensor input does not affect the tune. When he had his Mac scan tool data logger thing hooked to the diag port he said my fuel trim was fat at wot and leaned it out some. But after I got home from his shop driving down interstate at 75mph for 120 miles the tail pipe was sooty and black. Seems to me it was still fat. Truck seemed to be able to hold speed ok though.
