Parking Brake Problem

I have a 96 F150, when I went to go use my parking brake the peadal went to the floor with out any effort. It sounds like the ratchet is working, there just isn't any resistance. New brake cables were installed. Are there any adjustments I could make, or do I have to install a new assembly?

Try backing up and taping the break pedal a bunch to make sure the shoes are tensioned. other than that, there is a nut on the line runs from the pedal to just under the bed. The nut takes up the slack and makes the one cable split off into two. Look at the drivers side frame rail and you should see the one cable going in to a U channel and then turn to two cables.

I don't know what backing up and taping the brake pedal is going to do. The shoes are self-adjusting, true, but they're not that smart. They would have to be WAY out in order to see that behavior, and in that case, the brake pedal itself would be on the floor whenever he pressed it.

Either the cables are broken, or they've come loose under the dash or inside the drum. You'll have to take it apart to see where the problem lies.

The brake cables are new, the parking brake grabs sometimes. It almost seems something is wrong in the parking brake assembly. Are there any adjustments/checks that can be made in the assembly itself or should I install a new one?

The parking brake uses the same shoes and hardware that the hydraulic rear brakes use. Pull the wheels & drums and check the brakes.
