Parking Brake Locking...

Well got a new parking brake cable as my passenger side cable was seized up so once I install that the parking brakes should be in working order.

I have the pull handle style parking brake inside the cab and the only issue with it is that when you pull it out to engage the parking brake it won't automatically lock in place to keep the parking brake locked in place. Any idea why the handle wouldn't lock on its own?

I have tried to look at it as best as I can and it does have the little metal piece that is suppose to lock it in place just don't know if there is suppose to be a spring or something like that with it to make it lock.

There is supposed to be a light spring on the locking tab to apply a little bit of pressure. It could be that it needs to be cleaned off and lubricated. I don't know how far under the dash you have been but there is normally a heavy coat of dirt covering almost every inch of the underside of the dash. If you have a shop vac that would be the best way to get rid of it all. The parking brake actuator unbolts from the engine compartment and 2 screws under the dash if you want to remove it for easier cleaning.

oh ok, well do you know a good place that shows a diagram of how the parking brake should be properly installed? I think mine is just rigged in and I have to have it to pass inspection here so I have to figure out how it should be.

I was looking through my LMC book and didn't see a single part for a parking brake system that has the pull handle setup vs. the pedal setup.

Thanks

All 61 to 66 F100 f250S Have the pull type. There is no illuistration in the factory shop manual that i can find in the brake section. The Ford drivers manual does have an ullistration of operation of the unit.

A really simple unit. Consists of only five parts. The handle and shaft, A mouniting tube, Pawl pin and spring. and a retaining Pin for the cable.

Undo the two bolts from the dash and the two from the firewall. Let the unit as a whole tilt towards the floor and clean the DOGS they are the notches on the top of the shaft. To remove the shaft grip the Vertical pin in the slot and pull. a light wiggle will get it out. This will allow the head of the cable to pass out the back of the shaft.

As you pull the shaft out note the pawl and springs location.

There is a small Pawl about 1/2" wide on a pin and spring (on Top). The dogs fill up with crap over the years and do not allow the pawl to enguage.

If the spring is missing a new one can be fabbed easily. Once ya have it all clean and re lubricated put it all back together in reverse.

No one i know make replacment parts. But if needed you can ask Number Dummy to post the individual parts numbers of the assembly and probally Green sales had the goods.

You by chance did not tighten the cable so there is not enough slack. If to tight the lever will not come up enough for the latch to catch.

Thanks guys.

I haven't tightened anything to be honest. I am trying to fix what someone else half *** rigged up so not sure how certain parts go.

I will just take the pull lever from under the dash to see whats going on with it maybe.

As airharley indicated, if the parking brake handle does not remain in locked or parking position possibly the keeper, or spring may have shifted. Had simular problem and found I had installed the keeper upside down. Looking at the parking brake handle there is a series of grooves at the end of the shaft. Inside the handle housing there is an 'H' shaped keeper and spring that sets inside a slot at the end of the parking brake housing. The grooves in the handle shaft ride along the keeper and once you reached the desired position the spring applies pressure on the keeper and locks handle in position. Rotating handle shifts keeper from groove allowing the parking brake to be released. Sorry for the sad explaination.

The two parts that are troublesome are the:

Pawl = OM-2786 (GREEN SALES has 5) 800-543-499

Spring = OM-2788 (GREEN SALES HAS 10)
These two parts fit ALL 1960/65 Falcons; 1962/65 Fairlanes & 1965/66 MUSTANGS.
