Black Smoke

My truck is an 04" with 04" motor.Today started er up and no sound.running almost silently. So its blowing lots of black smoke. Then after a little bit stomped the peddel and off we go and the smoke cleared up and now seems to be okay. The truck is stock less the Banks monster exhaust.Read the DTC's and none are present.I had the FICM replaced a month ago or so, other than that no problems. Any help on this would be great. THANX.

Black smoke from a diesel means heavy on fuel and white smoke is light on fuel. One way to be heavy on fuel is to have limited air supply, may be as simple as a dirty or clogged air filter. If it did this suddenly, there may be something blocking it.

I don't understand the "sounded like it was barely running" running noise either, i had an 04 that did that also. Good luck.

pull your egr valve and see if you are carboned, if so clean with some carb cleaner

I agree, sounds like an EGR issue.

I had some white smoke, and lots of black smoke. I unplugged the EGR and MOST of both colored smokes went away. I was still getting some white smoke when the truck was cold after a stop while idling and acceleration. After the truck warmed up the white smoke went away. Ironically, the last two tanks of fuel I used, I didn't put any Stanadyne fuel supplement. Since the last refill I added the Stanadyne and magically the white smoke has dissapeared for now. So, with the deletion of the EGR and consistently adding a fuel supplement I have virtually no smoke of any color. Obviously when in the high power levels and stab it...it smokes....but that's normal.

One thing with these engines is to get a diesel fuel cetane value of 45. Which will eliminate the white smoke (unburned fuel). By adding the stanadyne you are increasing the cetane to near this.

I wouldn't do it if the warranty is still in place as this would be an unauthorized repair. Hate to loose the warranty. As this would only cost $100 for the deductable.

Save the $100 and pull the egr and clean it. You don't have to replace the gasket but can if you just want to for peace of mind.

ford does offer oring kits for like $10 bucks i think. if nothing else just pull it out and look at it. if is just sooty, then just stick it back in. if alot of carbon is chunked around it, use some carb cleaner or some engine brushes.

Well I took it out.How do I tell if it is stuck open?No soot just carbon. Also there is carbon buildup in the bottom of the manifold. Is that normal? Also after I clean it what do I torque the bolts to?They seemed very tight.....
