I have an '04 F250 4X4 SC that I don't drive back and forth to work any more because of the price of diesel fuel. I try to drive it maybe at least once a week. The other day i was driving it and noticed a noise coming from under the hood when I would let off after accelerating. It also makes the noise under 3/4 throttle acceleration. I have heard some people call this a turbo "phart". My truck has never made this noise before. I have about 17,000 miles on it, stock exhaust and use the Diablosport Predator (65hp setting). Any ideas?
your turbo is sticking. you can try this. go for a long drive at least thirty minutes of non stop driving. put the trans in 3rd gear and do alot of stop and floors. if the turbo can be saved this will do it. if not then it will need to be manually cleaned or replaced.

Sounds very much like the infamous turbo fart. The turbo sytem on the 6.0L was built without a waste gate. So, under heavy to moderate acceleration, the turbo spins up to feed more air to the engine. If you let off the accelerator quickly, the excess built up pressure cannot take the normal route through the engine, and, without having a pressure release valve (i.e. waste gate) to escape from, that pressurized air then takes the only other path it can....back out of the turbo. It is at this point that you hear the farting-type sound, as the air "flutters" past the turbo vanes on its way back out the intake side of the turbo.
I wouldn't say a stuck turbo, as the OP doesn't describe anything about making no/low boost or max boost.

I can't say I'm an expert on VGTs... however, I know that my unchipped truck started experiencing turbo farts much worse shortly before the head gaskets lifted. The root cause was turbo overboost due to sticking vanes.
I can't imagine having the turbo vanes "sticking". I don't have very many miles on it and I am using Rotella 5w-40 synthetic. Can this be fixed? Do I need to bring it back to the dealer??
low miles is the problem. drive it in third gear hard like i stated and it might free up. this is not normal and it should not do it, period. the vgt system works like a wastegate.
If you're farting on a regular basis - see a specialist. However, if it farts occasionally, like mine does, keep an eye on it. Lately, i have not been driving my 250 because of my business travel - I noticed my truck likes to be driven - and things calm down once it has been put through its paces. BTW, mines farted since new and especially when I nail the go-pedal and pull off quickly. No worries, here.

i have a 2006 powerstoke, and i run diablo sport predator also at 65 horse tune and when i mash the throttle and let off suddenly my truck sometimes makes a hell of a noise in the turbo also, it sounds like the turbo impeller is rubbing the turbo housing or something..............but the truck will haul with the predator hooked to it....
do you have a open element filter? you notice it more with a tuner due to the open element filter.
i run a k and n open element filter and a diablo sport tuner and i notice it farting sometimes when i floor it and let off the gas suddenly, the cold aie intake filter system is coming off and going back to k and n this week and the factory system is going back on until i can afford the afe stage 2 filter intake system, just got this truck back from ford for a warranty oil leak, they check the turbo also and said it looks like the impeller has been sandblasted a little because ths finish is coming off the impeller, they say that the filter is letting particles pass thru it or the intake is creating moisture or condensation and sucking it into the turbo and hitting the impeller when it is spinning at sonic speeds which is taking off the finish and dulling the veins.......
Mine farts more often when the truck hasn't reached operating temp after letting off after a quick spool. Almost seems like computer knows it is cold and makes it fart. dunno. Kinda telling me to chill until I see 190. It will fart more when in the higher power settings. It has also farted slightly more since the EGR plug fell off. Truck gets better and better as the miles increase. 5k to date.
