I live up north and have snow so i would you your input on a locker in the snow beent thinking about it for my dd the noice and cherping i have no problem with its saftelty . its an 8.8 axle for my ranger and wanted your guys input about it. if i take care is it safe or is it just dangeruous?
I'd stick with the regular diffy setup, because if you have a locker it will do what its called even if you are just pressin the gas normally around corners n such it will fishtail. Its more towards the dangerous side since you won't have any grip because of the snow on paved or dirt roads.
The problem is glare ice, crowned roads, and the Ranger is very light on the rear end. Not a good combo with a locker. Then again, the people you usually see ditched on the side of a road in Maine on I-95 during a snow storm are those macho SUVs, Subarus, etc. Hardly ever see a pickup truck flipped.
So ... the driver is probably more of an issue then a locker.
If you do not have money for a selectable locker, for on road use and a DD, I think a limited slip and green diamond tires would be a good choice.
I think a locker is good idea, but be carefull and go slow on ice and freezing rain covered roads. I have an EZ-Locker in the front and rear on my F-250.
The extra traction is great but when going too fast on ice covered roads the truck will slide sideways on turns and it will suck you into the ditch. The good news is that you might have enough tires spinning that you might be able to drive out.
