relocating steering gearbox

I have a 77 f150 2wd and I need to either relocate the origanal steering gearbox or replace it with a smaller unit, none power, so I can get header clearance for some 2 1/8" tubes. I don't know about other f150's, but mine has the gearbox on the inside of the frame with not much room to do anything with it. I now have hooker supercomp 1 7/8" and it is a tight fit. Has anyone done this or have any ideas? I am not a steering system guru. Thanks

Can't really help you with your problem, but I'm just curious. What do you have sitting between your frame rails that needs 2 1/8" tubes?? If you have something that works, why not just use them? Just remember, BIGGER isn't always BETTER! Well, in some things, anyway!

It has a 520ci stroker, my best guess and talking to people that might know I think I am giving up about 35 horsepower.

nitro520 - my 76 F250 is also 2wd so I probably have the same steering box as you do. I think the 4wd 'Highboys' have a different steering setup...? Can that box be used in your situation? There must be lots of advice in this subject out there....

Not sure, I guess I need to find one and see. My guess is probably not because the 2wd use the twin I beam.

High boy box wont work. 2wds are rear steer and 4wd are front steer.

now this is just a thought, maybe i'm out of my mind.. but wouldnt it be possible to swap the spindles L to R? that would bring the tie rod mount up front... just a thought, maybe someone else could shed some more light on the subject

Please, I'm not trying to get anyone p....d off for sure. No offense intended, but isn't this turning into a bunch of work and possibly expense for a set of headers??

how about a quick cut/chop/rebuild on the new headers to reangle the offending tobe (s) to miss the steering box. it should only take a 1/4 to 1/2" offset if the headers are only 1/4" bigger in diameter

Yes, this is alot of work for a set of headers, but I will do almost anything for more horsepower. I think at this point after talking to the engine builder I can still achieve what I need to thru the 17/8" headers. My goal is 11.50 at 5200 ft of altitude.
