Zach,

I don't know about your specific truck, but I do know about exhaust systems a bit. Converters work at specific temps. For example if you were to replace an old converter with a new high flow unit, but positioned it too far from the engine, it will not work properly. My point is those "cat" looking chambers further back are resonators, and they have nothing to do with vehicle emissions (except sound emissions). Resonators are just that, they resonate the exhaust pulse to mellow out a production car/truck's noise level. Generally speaking the converters will be very close to the engine/headers. Usually no further back than the front floor boards.

You can remove the resonators, although I wouldn't expect any noticeable gains in performance. Your truck may be louder, but as everyone should know, more sound does not = more power.

For everyone else, regardless of local inspections it is a violation of Federal law to remove/tamper with emissions equipment like the converter. There is a good reason why shops will hang up on you if you call them asking to remove a converter from your truck. $25,000+ fine for them and $2500+ for you. Moral of the story, if you have increased the output of your engine and you want better exhaust flow, do it the legal way with a quality high flow converter that is EPA approved.

I'm not looking for better flow, I've been around with exhaust systems several times.

Jeez I need to get out and find a station like you guys' though. Maybe just try somewhere else around here.

So no resonators...well dangit! Oh well...I'm planning on doing the rest of the exhaust this weekend, I'll keep you guys up to date.

Thanks for the help.

True fact, there is a Federal law against tampering with emissions equipment:

This is for everybody's benefit, including moderators.....

No, don't contaminate the tech thread. Why do that since in this matter, the Federal Law noted has only been in place since at least 1975. Oh, don't ask me how I remember this fact other than I was around back then. But for the very young *peer* here to encourage the general public to violate federal law without warning the audiance and for nada to happen is pretty disturbing to say the least.......................
