I know what the code is, but my question about the error code is can driving with the cylinder misfiring cause more problems/damage? As it stands right now I don't know when I'll be able to get my truck in to get the coil fixed (I'm assuming it's the coil because same thing happened to me earlier in the year and it was the coil, this time it's a different coil) and my truck is the only form of transportation I have to and from work. My drive is about 10 miles each way, and aside from that, I don't drive much. So would I be okay to continue to drive for a few more days, the longest would be next weekend.
Misfire = Unburned fuel. When that goes into your exhaust, it usually ignites inside your catalytic converter. True, a flashing CEL is worse than one that's not, but you still have fuel igniting in your cat. Drive it long enough and you'll be replacing that too.
To be honest, a few days of 10 mile drives probably won't hurt too much, but the above is reality and I wouldn't wait longer than you have to.
The problem could be as simple as a bad spark plug too.
#2 cylinder is probably the easiest one to replace the plug and COP on if you're going to tackle it yourself.
You could:
Test the resistance of the COP
Put a new plug in #2 and see if that corrects it
swap the #1 and #2 COPs to see if the #1 cylinder starts misfiring
or...
Just replace your spark plugs and your #2 COP for a nice tune up.
FYI, it could be a spark plug. If you didn't have a COP system, it would probably be a spark plug. But in these trucks, chances are it's a COP. They're really not that expensive and not that hard to change though...
How much are the COPs? If they're not real expensive I may look at getting 8 new ones and replacing them all so I know they're all new and good. Even though I had my #3 replaced not even 10 months ago.
I found an ignition coil on PartsAmerica.com (online store for Advance Auto), and a Motocraft Ignition Coil is $59.88, Motocraft part # DG508. Same part number as on PartsGalaxy.com (parts store for local Ford dealer). Now correct me if I'm wrong, but the ignition coil for my truck will in fact be what bolts down over each plugs, right? AKA the Coil Over Plug? I'm thinking if that's what I need, I'll get one of those and one new plug and that'll hopefully solve the problem.
I bought the coil today at Advance Auto Parts and got it installed and it's working just fine now! I unhooked the negative cable on the battery and got the computer reset, and the CES light isn't on anymore.
