Question Adding a Factory Posi Lock

My truck has an open rear and it sucks. Will a Factory posi fit into my truck with no problems? Are they good units, do they work like there suppose to?

This is Actual Pic and is this a Ford factory posi lock?

I love my factory limited slip. It has been very durable and works well. Make sure to add the additives to your fluid.

You will need to buy new ring and pinion. The ring gears are different thicknesses IIRC

Got it from this company. I wouldnt say it was cheap I got all new parts and bearings.
Cost a little less than $1000.
But it was worth it I was constantly getting stuck.
Plus I had to replace most everything anyway since I had a bad pinion bearing that trashed the bearings.

There were two on e-bay that went fairly cheap. One was the standard posi and the second was a more elaborate limited slip.

The unit you pictured is the standard posi. Clutches are behind the spider gears. SOme have an "S" spring in them. Search using sterling and 10.2.

Not to impessed with the standard unit. My heavy truck really needs the heavier unit. There are new ones listed also, over $1000 though.

Ford uses the 75 W140 synthetic without additives. Costs around $50.00 /gallon.

Can you explain more about this? I want to change mine too and I want to know what I'm getting into. You can just swap them with out replacing the ring and pinion? Thanks

I swapped a factory LS in and it was bolt in. The I just put new bearings in it and bolt my ring gear on and off I went. It needs clutches so I really don't like how it operates right now. by the time I put the bearings and clutch in I am half way to an Auburn unit. but as far as I know both the 10.5 and the 10.25 factory units are bolt in you just reuse your ring gear. you should really check the tooth pattern to make sure things are good there but mine was right on when I got it all back together.

That was a year ago, do you really expect me to remember what I was thinking JK

There are 2 thickness rings gears for after market carriers.

The ford LS and super duty LS is a bolt in like Tim said.
I just did the 3 pinion SD swap...love it. No more getting stuck on wet grass.

IIRC= If I Remember Correctly

Well, since this is exactly one year ago since I posted this I bought a full locker from ebay since then. Lockright works great you just have to get use to it ratcheting around tight turns, and its a simple task to install it. No more slip for me locks up instantly because of being a full locker and its 100% to each wheel.
