cranking time before start

Hello all,

I am proud to be a new PS owner! I love my "new" (2001) truck but wonder if it is normal for it to crank for 5-6 seconds before starting. The glow plug light comes on and stays on for 3-4 seconds and then it will start but the time (5-6 seconds) seems a little long to be cranking on a starter motor. I do not have any experience to call on or freinds with PS to compare notes with. Can you all give me some feedback please?

Thanks!!

That seems a little long to me as well. Most of them crank for a max of 2-3 seconds. In the morning when the oil is thick and cold mine will start in less than 2 seconds.

Welcome to FTE Venture327!
I'm with Kwikk on the starting time length. 2-3 seconds max. crank should fire it
under most circumstances. If you live in a mostly colder climate where your GPR
get's used more often then it problably needs replacing. NAPA sells the GPR 109
for about $30 if you want to try this route. I had to replace mine in my '02 PSD last year.

Check your batteries. Dying batteries increases the crank time. To check them you have to unhook them and test one at a time. If you leave them connected and test you will get a false reading.

I agree with pocket. Happened to me and batteries fixed it.

Remember - replace both of them at the same time.
Test bateries (load) - when both are disconnected from the truck and eachother

Dan, any way to get that file so I can save it? Normally I'd copy the link into google, then it'll come back with the link as a result, and I can right click/save that. For some reason that won't work with this one. I can play it imbedded in IE but can't seem to save a copy.

Ryan if you look in your temporary internet files after listening to it there will be a copy in there that you can drag to your desktop.

Links here are redirected so when you rightclick and save as you get the redirect instead of the file

Wow, have only had my 2001 for about 2 weeks and it had never failed to start until the temp went down this week close to freezing. It never cranked quite as fast as the one in that clip and I was wondering at the time if the 6 seconds to start was too long as well. In my case it is obviously one of the batteries. But I have a question regarding batteries now.
This was a shuttle bus and has a wheelchair lift on it that will draw a pretty good load. This lift will be used frequently (by me). I was hoping to put 2 yellow top optimas in it but the dimensions are too tall for under the hood. My solution is to go with only 1 yellow top and just re and re the interstate battery under the hood. Any comments on what kind of problems this could result in?
Thanks.

we used to run separate batteries for the lift using a RV diode isolator to maintain charge. otherwise the cables got way too long and thick to make starting easy

the type # 45 with a cca of 750 is what is stock, (watch out for explorer batteries that are only 600 cca) and they were significantly smaller than the optimas I looked at.

when they modified it for the new body, did they leave the dual battery setup and have a tray for the lift battery or just run cables for the lift along the frame?

Click on my sig: "5"exhaust" and you can right click on any of the links and "save target as".
If that doesn't work, let me know.

My nextdoor neighbor has a 2000 E350 with the 7.3L and his has the second battery under the sliding side door from the factory.
I'll shoot and post a pic or two in the morning back here on this thread.
You need all the juice you can get in the winter with these beasts.

man....i just got to looking at my batteries, because my truck has been slow to start, and apparently the last owner went cheap on the truck an stuck 725 ca 585 cca batteries in there. Needless to say i will be making a quick stop at Wally-World this weekend to correct this error before it really starts to get cold down here.

I'm just glad i saw this post so now i won't have to worry about my truck not starting one early morning when i need to be headed to class.

I hear ya. It's 25 degrees and snowing here in Denver right now.

I'm real glad I spent the last couple of afternoons getting the girl ready for winter.
