I did my first fuel filter change on my 05 F250 and noticed some particles when draining the HFCM. The particles were dark colored or a tan color almost like wax. I could rub one around on my finger and it disolved and was slimey. I was told that this was algae. I have been using Diesel Kleen starting a few months after I bought the truck usually every other tank. I plan on running a biocide for a month as suggested and changing the filter again. Is there anything that I need to do? Will algae cause dropping fuel milage from clogging the filters?
On mine the "water in fuel" light came went on and off until the algae was gone. Had to change filter again after two complete tanks were run thru. Guess, it is better to get closer to empty than just get half a tank.
If you have algae, you will need to treat your tank for them. I had a nasty case of them a year ago. They were like pond scum only greyish in color. I used Power Service Bio Kleen Diesel Fuel Biocide once to clean them up and once again just to make sure. I drained my filter more often during treatment to keep them from getting clogged Then I changed fuel filters when I felt like they were all gone.

That could have come from from a low volume Diesel fuel station. If they have algae in their storage tank it gets pumped right into yours. Diesel that sits in a tank for long periods can grow algae. That's a great reason to choose a high traffic station for fill-ups.
It's actually a microbe, not algae...and it's a real drag pulling out of some port and finding out two days later that you've just taken on 50,000 gallons of buggy fuel oil.

I have been filling up where all of the dump trucks go so the Diesel should be fairly fresh. Might have picked it up on one of the ramdom stations on a trip or something.
