I took a load of metal to the scrapyard this weekend and was surprised by how heavy this truck really is. Loaded with 2 people and a 6X12 trailer it hit #9880, which didn't surprise me. What did, however, was the unloaded weight, it weighed #7600 empty! The trailer can't be more than about #750, and no substantial extra weight in the truck. Just thought I'd share, seems that 7200 GVWR would come up faster than one may think.
one day go see if the scrap yard will let you roll ur trailer only on the scale just to see how much it exactly weighs. that might solve the mystery. because mine weighed a whole lot more than i thought.
My 05 FX4 scab weighted 6000lbs with a 1/4 tank of fuel. The way i figure it is that after taking the 750lbs you think your trailer weighs that still leaves 600lbs unacounted for. I really would look at them scales again, or weigh my trailer. I'm willing to bet that your trailer weighs closer to 1100lbs than 750lbs. that leaves around 300lbs to be divided between 2 people, again not to hard to believe. I'm not ragging, but weighing things is what i do for a living. When your weighing a truck you've got to weigh the truck. every little thing that you leave on the truck adds weight and it adds up very quickly. See even if your trailer weighed 1000lbs thats still just 400lbs divided between 2 guys and what ever gear you have on the truck. Again not hard to believe. Most Delta toolboxs weigh around 85lbs empty for the full size pickup truck. Yes it depends on which one. the low profiles is a few pounds less the big chest a couple more, but 85lbs is a pretty safe number. See how weight just stacks up?
I do agree with you in your point that gettingto the GVWR is no chore at all. The weight of the truck does'nt lend a hand at all., but i dont go by the GVWR anyway. I think the inpressive thing of these trucks is the GCVWR. You can skinny your rig down and put on some weigh on your trailer. My FX4 was rated for 8300lbs giving it a GCVWR of 1400-1500lbs not bad for a 1/2 ton truck{under 8800lbs GVWR}. Sure the guys that dont have trailers take a big hit.
Some of the responses make me curious. I'll have to find another scale sometime and weigh just the truck, or truck and trailer if I have it. This yard writes the weight down on a reciept, not printed out from the machine, and you can't see the readout. However, they paid me for 2280lbs, and I know that the trailer wasn't' loaded anywhere near as heavy as I've had it before( when it's heavy you can just get your fingers between the tire and fender) and I had about an inch to inch and a half there. Like I said i'll have to find another scale, or get another load of scrap and go to a different yard with just the truck.
My F150 truck ext. cab 6.5ft bed 4x4 2004 weighs around 6100lb i know the scale was correct. i calibrated it myself !!!! Man your guys trucks are heavy
