f600 engine swap?

New to the old truck scene. Not to motors in any way. I have utilized the old school FE based work horses and they have come up short in my opinion. The 460 makes mad power and if built right, can last just as long as an "Industrial 361/391 Motor" I have replaced these expensive rebuilds with a solid 370 bus motor or a 429/460 based motor. Money, power and what gets the job done rules!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not to take anything away from the FE/MLE Family. Yes, the MLE family! The 385 based (429/460) motor rules! Interchangeability sucks!!!!!!! What does not these days? I just bought a 1957 F600 w/ a Camper or some **** kind of shell. It has a 292 and 4 speed. That is coming out and being replaced by none other that a Ford 400 w/ 4v heads. Yeah baby get some!!!!! An E4OD on top of that. I gotta call BAUMAN for the computer.

Im sure some have read my posts on this subject. Trust me, the 391FT is the way to
go. It is a direct bolt in. They are around, so check around for Cab overs that were
very common using 391 5 speed Clarks. With a quick glance they have duel thermostats
a fatter crank with a big ball bearing pilot bearing, and a bunch of pulleys on the damper.
Use the 391 bell housing which will accept a 4 or 5 speed and that will bolt right to
the frame. The front mount is the same. All exhaust is 391 truck NAPA. The only thing
I had to do is I cut the bottom of the fan shroud and dropped it about three inches.
I have four F800 & 900 with this but all have overdrive. They run sweet quiet, power
and not that bad on gas for a 33,000lb truck. I though of big blocks and you must
be sure its a truck engine. Example 390s 360s Fe and 351 400 460 car have high
compression and will ping them self to death. 391ft is around 8:1 reg gas sodium valves.
I only have one truck with a 332 Y (Lincoln) Its like a Detroit 6-71 it wont do anything
unless its wounded up like it will blow up governed at 3800. My 391s are goverened at
3,000 rpms much more user friendly. Ill take a photo today of one.

Uh to answer he question on a 460 with a P T O Automatic trans , yep they are out there. As a former wrecker operator and mechanic I know them to be there too. The only gripeabout te 460 I have is the cost as they cost as much to overhaul as te Caddillac engines I saw earlier in this thread . As for Y Block engines , I was and for tat matternever was a fan of them as the oil passages were waaaay to small and somehow got cloged to fast to suit me , A decent machinist can correct that prior to installing new cam bearings as I had it done a couple of times when I lived in Dallas at a N A P A Machine shop there . By the way P T O 's are driven off the crankshaft of a automatic transmission vehicle too . Ed Shaver

If he is going to use an E4OD it needs to be the "4x4" version so it will accept the parking brake like the one above.
A ZF-S-542/547 from ANY F-100-450 (4x4) will work since they were used all the way up to the F-450 (as long as the 460 case is used).
The F450 uses the same parking brake as the one on my E4OD. My E4OD came out of a 94 F-450 SuperDuty 7.3L diesel.
My transmission guy swapped the internals from the transmission to the SBF/300 E4OD case.(they're all the same inside) I'm using a Bendtson adapter and a Baumann Engr controller.
If I had it to do over again I might have went with a severely built 300 inline 6 but when you open the hood on my F-600 it's going to "look " more original!
Cheers,
Rick
