I am thinking of buying a throttle body spacer for my 1996 F150, 5.8 V8. Are these worth it, do you really gain extra hp and better gas milage? How difficult are they to install for someone who is quite a novice in mechanics?
I slapped one in my '94 5.0 and noticed an increase in midrange power and mpg. Along with a whistling effect when listening to the truck run!
As per the difficulty of installation...it is quite easy in my opinion. I purchased the PowerAid version from Summit, and the directions were quite thorough.
I put the yeledyne unit in from Summit racing and I got a whopping 1 mpg increase as for power I dont know. My truck ran good without it runs good with it. I keep track of the fuel econmy regularly and actually measured thr difference.
think about it.. how would a tb spacer make more power? All it is/does is extend the length of the airtube and possibly allowing more engine heat to enter the incoming airstream.
Money is better spent on a cold air intake setup imo.
My fuel mileage went up almost 2 mpg. I grab an extra 70 miles per fillup on an aftermarket 40 gallon tank. Its been on the pickup for two plus years and has paid for itself well over. Throttle response improved but nothing to write home about. I bought the poweraid version.
The part was $60..15 minute install. Not much of an investment for a slight pick me up in mpg. Who doesn't mind an extra 30-40 miles on a (stock) tank?
$60 bucks would be better spent on a better flowing exhuast....or a coil, plugs and wires. Anything to actually make the engine run better. The ignition parts will help the most, with a stronger spark you get a better more efficient burn. Advance the timing a few degrees and youll pick up more than 1mpg.
As far as a long, in depth response...simply do a search for throttle body spacers and read through the 74 threads with the words "throttle body spacer" in them for more info.
