Unhappy Timing Question

When I set timing on my 360 I usually remove the hose that goes from the distributor to the water neck. Now I recently noticed when I remove that hose from the water neck it does not change the idle. It used to change the idle when disconnected. What can cause this? I can't seem to get the timing right. Its a 73 f250 360 c6 2wd 2bbl. I haven't changed anything recently. Thank You!

That hose goes to a ported vacuum switch that is temperature controlled. It is supposed to send manifold vacuum to the vacuum advance when cold and then route ported vacuum when the engine is warm. It may be that the PVS has gone bad, but that kinda disagrees with your observations. Are you sure the hoses are hooked up correctly?
