Hi all. I saw this on overhaul the other day. Does anyone know who makes a button shifter for a auotmatic transimission. It is supposed to be bolt on. Ed
I have seen a push button electronic shifter that is available for street rods, but I am not sure who makes it. I believe this is a fairly new item and Lokar isn't the company making it, either. Is that what you are referring to?
I saw boyd's shop use that one as well. Its electronic, however it works. Some of the old plymouths (maybe others) had a push button automatic on the steering wheel. I doubt it was electronic back then though.
EDIT: I couldn't find it on boyd's site. I found this site that says it is mooneyes just like 4 speed said.
Yea, the old mopars used a mechnical system that ran a cable to a torqueflight trans - never saw one converted to a C6, but no reason it would not work. Park was a seperate lever on some (most, all?) of them. I had it in a 56, and again in a 59 - not sure how many years they were produced.
The one Coddington used was electronic, and went into an electronic controller. I think it was a GM tranny so I didn't pay all that much attention. It was slick looking, though.
Don't know who makes them today, but Mercury's & Edsel's used Electronc P.B. Auto-trans shifters mounted in the steering wheel where the horn button goes & mounted in the dash back in the day.
I see both types come up on e-Bay all the time.
As Mr4 said Mooneyes made the one Coddington used. I had the dash mounted PB shifter in my 57 Dodge SW before I put in a standard 3 sd tranny from a plymouth with floor shifter. Neutral button was also the start button. Ther tranny had a band around a drum PB on the tail of the tranny, was not considered an emergency brake since it wouldn't stop the car.
That three speed, even tho it came out of a Plymouth also with the baby hemi was the weak link in the drivetrain. I would inevitably blow it up street racing Fri nite so I kept a spare I'd rebuild during the week ready to go in Sat AM. We did it so many times my brother Kevin (12 at the time) and I could swap it out in 20 minutes!
Thanks guys. That was Boyd that had it on his show. I am going to do some more research but not on a C6 but on an AOD. Oh I found a 68 mustang this week that almost opened my wallet but I still have to finish my truck first and I do not want to make the same mistake so many other members here have made. Ed
