7.3 Will Not Start

My 2001 7.3 Powerstroke failed to start yesturday. No Warning signs. When I turned the ignition switch on, I noticed the SES light on and the WTS light never came on. The engine cranks but does not fire. I found one battery had failed and the other was weak, so I replaced both of them today. I also noticed that the tach didn't move while cranking, which is often a sign that the CPS has failed, so I installed one that I had in the glovebox (purchased off of Ebay). Still the same thing. Nothing has improved. Had truck towed home today and am still trying to figure out what the problem is. I am thinking Glow Plug Module now. I have a California truck which is now in Wisconisn, so If that is the problem, it will be a module instead of a relay. I'm not sure where it is on the engine and need more diagnostic input from the forum. Thanks

the high pressure oil reservoir is on top of the motor in front, under the panel that says powerstroke diesel. On the top of the reservoir is a plug, remove it. There should be oil inside no more than 1" below the hole. If not, you have an oil delivery issue. Use a small oil can and fill the reservoir with oil and see if it will start.

unlee you have numerous bad injectors the truck should still start even if the glow plugs are not operating. the gpcm is the passanger side of the fuel bowl. unless the cps is a reputable name, i would put the old one back on. the rpm might not have been coming up due to the battery issue.

OK, I charged up the new batteries, then checked the HPOP reservoir and found the oil to be 2 inches below the top, so I added oil to near the top. I also checked the fuel filter. It had been changed less than 5,000 miles ago and is still clean. Still no improvement. the symptoms are the same. Thanks for the suggestion, any other ideas?

I charged the new batteries, checked the HPOP reservoir and found it was 2 inches from top, so I added oil. Checked the fuel filter, it looked good (less than 5,000 miles on it). Tried to start it and still the same symptoms as before. Any Ideas?

Check the IDM and PCM relay under the hood and the 3 fuses under the dash that tie into PCM functions, a no WTS and no SES light indicate PCM failure. Could be due to power issues.

It looks like I have a relay and also a module. It is a California Truck and from what I read in the forum, should have a module instead of a relay. Anyway, I suspect that the ebay CPS I put in is also bad, so ordered another one. Will try that, then attack the relay, module question.

Fuses & relay diagram for a 2000 year truck?

Amiller93,

Do you happen to have a similar link to the fuses & relays for a 2000 year truck? I just purchased a 2000 F-450 and it came with no manuals and the fuse panel under the steeriing wheel is not labled at all. I have no idea what fuses are for what and so on.

I do plan on ordering several manuals from Helm though, hopefully today I'll get to it.

I really like having hard copies of any kind of manual, that way I can keep them in my truck and not have to worry about always having my laptop with me and so on. I have been considering getting the manuals on DVD too, if the price is right.

Fair enough. $23 for the DVD. BTW, I'm looking at the diagram for the 2000 year truck. It is pretty much identical to the 01 with the exception of fuse 15 which is not used per the 00 diagram. It is in some kinda viewer format that I am too challenged to do something with in order to upload.
