i have a 94 Ranger 3.0 4x4. when i changed my oil, it was at the right level. now the level is way above the DO NOT OVERFILL line on the dipstick. i dont know what is in it but its bothering me. does anyone know what it could be? it also smokes blue out of the exhaust on startup and sometimes while driving. could it be a leaky injector? please help.
If it is fuel you should be able to smell the dip stick and smell gas. How is you water level? Also if your oil level is way above the full mark, drain some out. Don't run it with excess oil level.
well ive smelled it and i can smell something but i dont know exactly if it is gas or not. i think it is. do you have an idea of what it could be? water level has stayed the same.
Do a fuel pressure test & see if it'll hold pressure after the fuel pump has shut off.
If the pressure is ok, but dropps off right after the pump shuts off, it's likely you have one or more injectors leaking down.
If so, what you have now is fuel diluted lubricant in the oil pan, so if you remove anything from the pan, you'll be down on lubricant volume & still have diluted oil in the pan & filter.
SO, imo, if it's indeed fuel dilution, you should drain the sump & replace the oil filter & fix the problem. Driving the vehicle, with fuel diluted lubricant, will likely do damage to the engine.
Good job pawpaw, I should have said what you did about the complete drain and change. Pyerby, are you positive the oil level was correct after the oil change? Checked with the dipstick?
Some oil pans have two drain plugs. My brother did this on one of his vehicles, then just added 5 qts. and figured it was good, and ended up being way over full.(Not challenging your knowledge or ability but we don't know what your experience or knowledge is.)
i only have one drain plug and i checked it with the dipstick several times after i changed it....always do. but i had thought it was a leaking injector. i think i will change them anyway....cant hurt i guess. thanks yall.ill try and then see what happens.
Most common problem would be blown head gasket, water in oil, or antifreeze, whatever, it causes blue smoke as well. It does happen from time to time on the 3.0's. I have never had a 3.0, but just from reading the forums, the head gasket issue does come up on the 3.0's enough that it would be one of the first things I would check.
Blue smoke is burning oil, black is a rich condition. You are blue so its oil your burning. If its "Way Above" the overfill line it just sounds like you have too much oil in it, drain it back to the correct level. Fuel mileage sounds about right for 3.0l 4x4.
