3.0 oil pan gasket leak

3.0 oil pan gasket leak
I just noticed that the oil pan gasket has slipped out on the front of the 3.0 in my 1999 Ranger 4x4 with 3.0.
About how much should I expect to pay a dealer or other shop to repair this.
I have heard that this is not uncommon on the 3.0. Does anybody know what causes the problem.
Also is the 4.0 prone to the same problem or just the 3.0 ?

Dont know the installation labor, but the gasket itself was about $30. See the TECHNICAL INFORMATION link at the top of the page, then go to the 30L Technical Information & Tips link for a PDF file describing the 'new' pan gasquet.
I've done it (on a Sable) and had to drop the "Y" pipe and starter motor to gain access. I think there was a design fault in the first issue, unless it has been replaced before, and was installed incorrectly. THe block surface and timing cover surface and pan surface must MUST be clean and dry, or the gasket has 'lube' to allow it to slip out of place.. AND, the pan must be torqued using a torque wrench, or it will ooze.

I got a couple of quotes from dealers to replace pan gasket. Range is 750 to 1000. Both dealers say it is time consuming and will need car for 3 days.
I am not sure if I will have it replaced or not, right now it is not really leaking much. In fact I have not seen any drips actually make it to the ground when the truck is parked and I am not losing measurable amount when checking oil.
Has anyone had this problem before and if so can you tell me if this will stay about like this, or does it get progressively worse ??
I am not sure how much longer I want to keep this ranger and am wrestling with the decision of to fix it, or just drive it for another 20,000 miles and then trade it in.
Any accounts of real experiences with this pan gasket leak will be appreciated.

You don't need a dealer for that job. Talk to a reputable local shop, you should be able to get a much better price. Tell them that you will bring the Ford gasket kit (so that you know for sure they use the right one):

Thanks for reply, does the motor have to be pulled to do this job ? One dealer said it definitely does and gave price of 750. Second dealer was not sure and said 500 if not an 1000 if it need motor pulled.
What does it really take to do this on a 99 4x4 with 5-speed manual ? I am thinking maybe I will do it myself, I am always out of time - but for that kind of money I might find time. How long should it actually take for an occasional home mechanic ?
Is this leak gonna get progressively worse with time ?

I know that some people have done it themselves. If you do some digging in the 3.0L forum you should be able to come up with a few threads on the subject. IIRC, the engine is unbolted off the mounts and then raised up a few inches. Then, being mindful of the oil pump pickup tube, you drop the pan down just enough to get the old gasket off and the new one installed.
