Need Help!

Hopefully someone will chime in with some help...I have an 1982 F-100 4.9L I-6 3spd w/OD that seems to be misfiring while I'm driving. It just happened today on the way to work. So far I've changed the Cap/Rotor/Plugs/Wires/Fuel Filter/Fuel Pump/Air Filter/Starter/Starter Solenoid/Voltage Regulator/Battery.

When I first got the truck it was bucking and stalling, but after I changed the fuel filter it was okay. Since I just put 10,000km on the truck I replaced the fuel filter again and it has been fine. Could it be a bad ignition coil? I am not directly familiar with these older trucks so if anyone can offer some help that would be much appreciated.

it is possible it could be a bad coil, its a cheap enough replacement and any part store will stock it, you can probly get a coil for 20 dollars or under. id give it a shot

other ideas...

If I knew the coil specs I could just test it before I buy one so if anyone has a manual handy and could quote those numbers that would help a lot.

Does anybody have any other ideas as to what the problem could be? I can't see the timing being way off cause the truck idles fine, and will drive fine intermittently, it's only when you snap the throttle that the motor sputters really bad looking for power.

That makes me think accelerator pump or power (enrichment) valve. Have you put a carburetor kit in it?

Also, check the vacuum advance hose running from the carburetor base to the distributor.

Have you checked all your vacumn lines for leaks? I agree with Sport45, might be time to rebuild the carb.

still looking...

I've wanted to rebuild the carb for two weeks now but have not had any success finding a rebuild kit at any local parts places. However, it's been running decent up till now.
I was just outside looking at it and it's blowing black smoke out of the tail pipe intermittently.
I want to replace all the vacuum lines but I do not have a diagram for it. I looked at one on the Autozone website that seemed correct (1980 Model), but I do not know what some of the abreviations stand for.

I'll look at the vacuum lines you suggested and see if there are any problem areas there - thanks for the input - every little bit helps.

Here is a site that will tell you what all the abbreviations (that's an awful long word considering what it means) are for. Use the search function at the bottom left.

Is it hard to start after it sits a while? Unplug all the vacuum hoses from the carburator soon after you shut down. If gasoline starts dripping out of any of them there's a problem. That would most likely be a bad power valve.

First off, thank's very much for the website. That should help a lot.

It starts on the first turn of the key just fine - idles fine, but as soon as you give it some throttle it sputters and stumbles. Since I am at work I haven't tried unplugging any vacuum lines to look for fuel, just looking at it on break and lunch at this point. I aprpeciate all your help/info so far though it gives me more ground to cover in solving this problem.

How did it run before you replaced all those parts ?

That's a lot of money you spend for maybe a minor problem.

The problem can be a few minor things.

Usually it is a carb problem.
Fuel filter, power valve, float level,Ignition module, wornout distributor,pick-up coil in distributor ,etc

Intermittent problems are the hardest to Trouble-shoot

BTW <> next thread, please put the Topic in the title.

It helps for other users searching & lets us know what the actual thread is about.

We are already here to help so asking "For Help" is redundancy

My apologies about that - I'll remember for next time.
Well I replaced those parts because it sat for 2 years and the last tune-up was unknown. So i figured since I was given the truck free I would invest a little into it for peace of mind. After I replaced said parts it ran nicely up until today when it started to crap out on me. I ruled out the fuel filter since I just replaced that recently. I think I need to get my hands on a carb rebuild kit some new vacuum lines and go from there as you & Sport have said.

If it sat that long it's probably time to drop the tanks and clean them out. See if a new fuel filter helps. If it does you probably need to clean the tanks.
