I want to put some insulation on the roof to quiet down the cab some and maybe keep it a little cooler. I don't want to put something up there that will be falling down on my headliner. What's my best option ?
I recommend Dynamat or what I used is called FatMat (same as Dynamat but a little cheaper). I've done the entire inside of my cab with it, including the ceiling, and it's made a huge difference. You clean off the metal and just stick this straight to it. It's very thin and with a little heat can be shaped to fit any contours. Once it's up there it stays put. It will cut down vibrations and noise as well as help keep heat penetration to a minimum in the summer. You can buy it on Ebay by the roll.
I used "Super DynaMat" with the aluminum foil. (sounds like Ivan did too, just didn't say so) Also for insulation I used what looks like the plastic "bubble paper" like the stuff used for shipping but is flat and has aluminum foil on both sides and you get it at the hardware store.
Last time I had my transmission out I almost took picture but didn't danggit. :/
The inside of my cab is completely covered with super-dynamat, floor, inside the doors, inside the dash, even the ashtray, everthing but the windows. ;)
Did that when my kids were smaller and even super dynamatted the outside of the dishwasher and put their decal on the door "Dynamat Equipt" the kids thought that was funny as anything. :)
Yeah Alvin, I'm using FatMat brand as it was recommended to me by a friend who does custom stereo. It's essentially the same as DynaMat, just less expensive. I coated everything on my truck too . . . it's amazing what a difference it makes in noise (not that I can tell when the exhaust is open ). I've got a couple hundred dollars into it but that took care of every inch of that cab (Supercab).
Hey guys, thanks for the heads up on fat mat, I was just contemplating ordering some dynamat. If the fat mat is just as good, I can spend the extra $$$ on more horsepower!!!!
I don't have any insulation or carpet in mine yet. Still wokring on parts here and there. And its easier to clean interior without carpet from the dust coming in.
Insulation? Carpet? Yeah, the '79's got it. But on those nasty muddy days, I drive the '70 to work. No insulation, and a little bit of the rubber mats left. I can just hose out, and with the rust holes, she's self-draining. The empty 55 gallon drum acoustics are cool too.
I used a combination of dynamat and ice and water shield. I mostly covered the roof with dynamat and then covered the firewall and the doors inside and out with two layers of ice and water shield. $15 for a 100sq ft roll is not bad and I think its as good dynamat. Check in to it if you are going for the elcheapo method.
