I have a 03’ 6.0 liter and I live in Arizona<ST1. My ex will not get out of it own way in the mornings if I don’t let it warm up for over 10min. it idles fine but when you put is in drive and hit the gas it will go but slow. It is ok after a few miles if you force it there is no missing it just won’t go till its warm! Is this a motor problem or a trany issue?

hi at my work we have a ford 03 6.0 and when we would start it up and romp on it or even just drive it it did seem alitle less powerful some times the turbo would not build boost after a long time in the shop it got fixed now i dont know what they did to it but i have also been told that the diesel engine wont make power untill warmed up mabe as little as leting it runn for 1 min then driving not start then drive like most people would do the trick " thats from the service advisor" hope this helps
i have a 6.0 diesel and have never had any issues re warming up the engine at startup to get sufficient speed. my flies no problem at start up (ok, maybe 3 seconds or so lag).
anyway, i am no engine tech, but from what i know it sounds like an engine issue. could be a fuel injector issue, but i am guessing on this one. regardless, it should always have power. you should take it in to get it looked at. you dont want that thing dying in the middle of the road. my two cents.
My '03 just started doing similar. Slow going for first few minutes, then back to good power and driveability. I'm an interested bystander on this one.
Update yesterday my wife left for work and it died about 8 blocks from the house. She brought it home I got in and it died again while I was driving. I just pulled over let it sit for a min the cranked it up and it made it home. While sitting in the driveway I revved it and it died again. I started to get worried so I pulled the fuel filter under the hood I look great plus I just changed both last week. I then took off the air filter I looked dirty but I am not sure about those after market filters (it is an air raid) well any way I took it off and started the motor and it ran fine. So I washed it off with a water hose let it dry and went to pep boys to get a replacement it was $90 so I got the k&n cleaning kit. I got up early this morning warmed it up and it drove fine. Still a little slow but no stalling. Is this normal behavior for a dirty filter?
Just out of curiosity, does you air filter flow gause work? I'm still new with the Ex so I don't how well the gause really works. The filter in mine looks a little dirty but the gauge is still well into the green.
Think about what is happening. My opinion is that your air flow is not being measured correctly. It is not the lack of air flow but the fact that the air / fuel ratio (yes--even a diesel has to compute this) is not being calculated correctly.
I believe that the 6.0 uses a hot film anemometer (air flow meter) just like a gas engine. Many of the aftermarket air filters use oils etc. to get reasonable air filtration efficiency from low pressure loss reticulated foam air filters. The oil may migrate (fly off) the foam and end up on the hot film anemometer sensor. This in turn screws up the calibration of the sensor and then you have rich (most likely) or lean air/fuel ratios. Truck will run lousy when this happens.
Personally, I would never install an aftermarket air filter on my 6.0L. The original equipment Donaldson air filter is one of the best offered on any truck-period.
