Front end whine....STILL!

Hey all,
Hopefully one of you guys has some insight to my problem because my dealer has told me to just drive the truck untill something literally breaks. The truck is an 04 Lariat 4x4. I get a loud whine from the front end at any speed over 20-30km/hr. sounds like it's comming from the drivers side wheel. If I engage the 4x4 the whine goes away. I put it back into 2wd and after a few seconds it starts again. I already had the 4x4 actuator changed when I had my last problem. Any ideas as to what I can check? Thanks!

Sounds like maybe somw damage was done to the splines in the IWE, when the solenoid went bad.

I second that idea. Tell the dealer that driving around in your truck waiting for it to break down is unacceptable and probably dangerous depending on when the IWE lets go. You could be on the highway when it breaks, or it could be late at night. If they hear the noise then they should be able to diagnose it and fix it. If they keep giving you trouble elevate it up the chain of command at the dealership and you might get ford customer service involved. Sometimes they seem to be able to make the dealer service do their jobs, other times not.

IWE is the integrated wheel ends, part of the vacuum system that locks the front hubs when 4WD is selected. I don't know that it can be taken apart, but new ones at the dealer are about $40.00. I believe the part # is FMC 6L3Z 9H465 B.

Thanks! I've already changed the 4x4 vacuum solenoid which has part# 6L3Z 9H465 B I believe. However I'll look up the part number for the integrated wheel ends and let you know what it is and how much they go for. I think I might just go ahead and replace both sides this weekend.

Funny story.....the dealer told me that they had to order my solenoid(friday). They told me to come and get the truck, that the part won't be in until monday. They proceded to tell me that "it was safe to drive around with it like that" I told them, you better get me into a rental, otherwise you'll be hearing from the Ford Regional Rep......Needless to say they gave me an 05 250 diesel as a rental

Also, I don't have a part# for the IWE, but I'm sure they will cost more then $40

I will be going into the dealership probably on Friday to have them look at my e-brakes. Should I have them replace my solenoid? The whining noies went away when I completely bolted down my air box, but it is just something else that I dont want to worry about
