From the tach sensor located in the IP drive gear cover.
The engine in the picture is a 94 7.3 IDI turbo, but it is also wired to the same place in my 86 6.9.
The voltage regulator is on the passenger side inner fender well right behind the battery on my 86. It is a silver box with a flat plastic connector that has four terminals and about six wires going into it.

It has been a while since I was around a Detroit Diesel. I seem to remember a cable drive tach on the old ones. I think the drive was near the IP/air compressor.
We used to have a C 8000 series I think it was with the cab over configuration.
Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread some but I was hoping there would be similar stuff that could help us both.
No cable drive it is wired somehow. Took the instrument panel out and it is wired into the harness.
Cant seem to find any wiring diagrams that that show a tach source or actually even the tach itself in the IP.
I'm also wondering if this isnt even the original motor or even correct motor which would explain why most of the tach questions here seem to have that drive by the oil filler.
But this forum deals with F250, F350 & F450 trucks that had the Navistar 6.9 and 7.3 IDI engines installed. You have to be talking about something larger or something that someone else installed that was not factory. I also remember Cat, Detroit Diesel and Cummins engines in the bigger trucks.
What the 6.9 engine has means nothing if you have another engine.
The tack sensor is located on the housing in front of the injector pump where the injector pump gear is. It is an electric tack with the sensor having a large hex head(like inch or so) with 2 black wire leads coming out of it.
Dave & Dnewton,
You can't imagine how timely this thread is for me. I am in the process of putting a 6.9 in place of a 460 as well. Dave, your information is invaluable. Thanks again for me. And Dnewton, you're asking the questions just one step ahead of me. Good luck with your project.
your more then welcome rick, and the best of luck to you! ive taken before, and during pictures, as soon as i get it all put together, ill post them up and let everyone see.......rick, if you have any questions while puttin your motor in, submit a post or pm me, we will all try to help!!!! what year truck ar you putting your 6.9 into?
