Are you shure the whole engine is junk? I would think if all you lost was a piston, conrod, an a few walvetrain components, than it might be worth salvaging. If you could rebuild the engine you have, than at least you know what you've got under your hood.

I used to be a junk yard junky and I learned some hard lessons about that.rebuild or buy a crate motor last time I look at one from ford they ran about 5000 to 6000 depending on what you get.they have done some upgrades to the idi crate motors.thats a little better price as compared to what you could spend on a junker and fixing it.atleast if you buy a crate motor you know what you have.a junker is a hit or miss most times its a miss.to save your self the head acks and the wrench throwing buy a crate motor.your last option is to take that 5 or 6 Gs and make it a down payment on a newer truck.

When my truck was given to me it had a hole in piston no. 1. I found a little shop in town that works on big trucks and the owner had grease under his finger nails. They did a fantastic job of re-building mine. All for $3,600 out the door. The owner even drove the truck a week just to be sure there were no problems (I think he just liked the truck though). I would rebuild it.

All the time and effort of pulling the engine and reinstalling it, personaly I'd replace it with a rebuilt engine! Weather that be a 6.9 or 7.3, that's up to you but to me, piece of mind is worth a lot. Good luck in what ever you decide.
