hey guys, just wondering what kind of exhaust you all have on your rangers to get an idea of which is the best
i have an 03 ranger extended cab flareside with the 4.0
i would like to get duals out the back so any info is appreciated and did you feel an improvement after you did it?
I, personally, have a Flowmaster knockoff made by American Force. Cost half the price and I like the sound. Quite a few guys here have Flowmaster, a few have Borla and even fewer have Magnaflow. Many are going to steer you away from glasspacks, though. Check out www.exhaustsoundclips.com (I think that's it), as they have sound clips of many exhaust configurations for the 4.0. It's all about what sound you are going for.
And also, you won't notice an improvement in performance (maybe with gas mileage) with exhaust alone.
I've got the SOHC 4.0 and I gotta 40 series Flowmaster and I am very pleased with the sound. Most of my friends thought I had a V8 under the hood. I am considering cutting my tail pipe off and dumping it with turn-downs to make it a little bit louder. I can't say much performance gain, some but not a whole lot.
I usually run strait pipe, no muffler, just catalytic converters, and I've never noticed ANY performance gain on any vehichle I've modified. I do, however, get a nice wide grin every time I poke the go-pedal! But remember, the louder it is outside, the more you'll feel/hear it inside, even with full-length exhaust. I would either recommend a premade like Dave has, or having an exhaust shop custom build your system, which is what I've always done for duals. In that case, pick the muffler you like for volume/tone, and have them do the routing and exits you prefer, you'll get exactly what you want and not spend much more than buying a pre-bent kit, you'll just have to give your truck up for a day or two. Just a suggestion, and there's nothing wrong with stock either!
thanks guys....i dont want something loud, slight rumble but i want more power and mileage.
now i went on to Borlas site and flowmasters site and they said they didnt make a system for the ranger.....and i dont really like the gibson exhaust...my dad has the borla on his f-150 so thats why i was looking for them but i found only magnaflow made the duals
and i was just on the bob jusnes site and i saw the electric fan for the ranger....do you think it would be better to get a setup that has 2 smaller fans or just one big one?
2 smaller fans really wont give you good coverage, with our 16" kit, you can reinstall the stock shroud back on top of it, to help maintain even airflow over the radiator.
From what you are describing, magnaflow will the right muffler for you anyway, they are not made to be loud, but they do make power. When you first install it, it will sound stock for a day or 2, and the muffler will continue to break in for a few months, giving you a good performance tone, that people will hear, but it wont be loud and obnoxious
thanks bob..... very nice website you got there....lookin at all the items and really lookin at a couple things....thanks guys
also....what else would you recommend for more power and mpg? i was going to do exhaust and the brute force intake.....would the fan help much? and what about that bamachips programmer?
sorry for all the questions.....just lookin for some more power and mpg
a fan will definately help with the MPGs, and i would move that BamaChips programmer way up on your list, probably the best bang for the buck mod you can get. The Brute force intake is a good one too, with the oilless filter. Just IM or PM me if you have any specific questions, i had an 03 4.0 myself
I have a flowmaster 40 series single inlet dual outlet with 3 1/2" magnaflow stainless tips strait out the back on my 04 4.0 and I like the sound it gives. If you want a little quieter you might try a Flowmaster Delta 40 Series. Also look into www.aero-turbine.com for a nice muffler although I think you would have to buy 2 mufflers to get the duals. Nice mufflers though.
